BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team placed a pair of individuals on the All-Ohio team, it has been announced. Senior Beth Wechsler and freshman Kristy Coppes each were named to the team, which is selected by a vote of the state of Ohio's NCAA Division I women's soccer coaches.
Both Wechsler and Coppes earned third-team all-state honors.
Wechsler becomes the first player in school history to earn All-Ohio honors in all four years. She was a first-team pick in 2000, a second-team selection in 1998 and a third-teamer in both 1999 and 2001.
Wechsler, a tri-captain from Cincinnati, Ohio, was one of six Falcons to start all 19 matches in 2001. She was fourth on the team in scoring with nine points. Wechsler tied for third on the team with three goals, and was fourth on the Falcons with three assists. She had the match-winning goal vs. Wright State, and had a goal and an assist against arch-rival Toledo. Her other goal came against Buffalo.
Wechsler finished her career tied for the BGSU record with a total of 78 matches played. She started 77 contests, the second most in BGSU history, and ranks fifth on the school's all-time scoring list with 32 points. Wechsler is third in BG annals with 16 assists, and her total of eight goals ranks her seventh on that school career list.
Coppes, of course, receives All-Ohio honors for the first time. A native of Findlay, Ohio, she was the Mid-American Conference's Newcomer of the Year in 2001, after leading the team in scoring. Coppes had 12 goals, tying the school single-season record, and 26 points. Her point total ranks second on that school list, just three shy of the record.
Coppes set several additional school records in her initial season, including most consecutive matches with a goal (four), goals in a match (three vs. Youngstown State, tying the school record) and points in a match (seven vs. YSU, again tying the school record).
In addition to her MAC Newcomer of the Year award, Coppes also was named to the Soccer Buzz Great Lakes Region All-Freshman Team this year.
The Falcons finished the 2001 season with an overall record of 7-10-2, and BGSU posted a 2-9-1 MAC mark.
