TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team entered Saturday (Jan. 26) looking for the first win of the season in dual-match play. The Falcons achieved that objective several times over, sweeping a trio of matches at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
BGSU, now 3-1 on the year, opened the day with a 4-0 win over the University of Dayton. The Falcons of head coach Jay Harris also topped Chicago State University, 7-0, and Youngstown State University, 6-1, on the day.
Against Dayton, the Falcons captured the doubles point, getting wins from junior Geoff Hiscox and sophomore Joel Carney at the top flight and from senior Ed Kuresman and junior Peter Gardonyi at the third level.
In singles play, senior Vitek Wild did not lose a game en route to a straight-sets win at the top flight. Sophomore Milos Jirout, like Wild a native of the Czech Republic, won at the third flight, while senior Mike Kossoff captured his match at sixth singles.
The other three singles matches were not completed. The BGSU-UD match was halted once the Falcons accumulated the fourth point and clinched the match victory, as the Flyers had a match at Michigan State scheduled for later in the day.
BGSU swept the doubles point against Chicago State, with the Carney/Hiscox duo again victorious at the top flight, and the Kossoff/Wild team triumphant at the second level. The third doubles team of Gardonyi and freshman Ian Bliss posted an 8-0 win.
BGSU won all six singles flights vs. the Cougars, all in straight sets. Wild (No. 2), Jirout (No. 4) and Kossoff (No. 6) each lost only one game in their respective matches, while Hiscox (No. 1), junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (No. 3) and Carney (No. 5) also picked up victories.
The Falcons played the singles matches first in the Youngstown State contest. Bliss, playing at the top flight, dropped his match, but each of the other five Falcons emerged a winner. The singles competitors, in order from the second through sixth flights, included Kossoff, Gardonyi, Jirout, Kuresman and Lopez-Acevedo.
In doubles, the Jirout/Kossoff tandem lost at the top flight, but the Brown and Orange got an 8-0 win from Gardonyi and Lopez-Acevedo and an 8-1 victory from the team of Bliss and Kuresman.
On the day, Gardonyi went 4-0, while Carney, Hiscox, Kuresman and Lopez-Acevedo all were 3-0.
"It was a very good day for us," said Harris. It was definitely very tough to play three matches in a day, but our guys fought through it and actually got a lot better as the day went on.
"I think, in the Dayton match, they played us a little closer than we wanted. As a team, we weren't as focused as we needed to be in that match. Then, though, I think we learned and grew as a team, and we played much better in the last two matches of the day.
"Now, we have a few days to prepare for Ohio State."
The Falcons will head to Columbus to face the Buckeyes on Wednesday (Jan. 30), with that match scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
