BGSU Hosts Marshall, Ohio This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, fresh off a pair of Mid-American Conference road victories, returns home for two league matches this weekend. The Falcons (5-4-1, 3-2-0 MAC) of head coach Andy Richards will return to Cochrane Field for a Friday (Oct. 4) match vs. Marshall University. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Marshall contest begins a five-day stretch in which the Falcons play three times.

Following the MU match, the Brown and Orange will play a Sunday (Oct. 6) match vs. Ohio University, scheduled for a starting time of 2:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field. Then, BGSU will head to the Queen City for a Monday (Oct. 8) match vs. the University of Cincinnati. That non-conference match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. at UC's Meyers Field.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his third year as a head coach, all at BGSU, and has an overall record of 22-24-4 heading into the Marshall match. Richards, who came to BG after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her third season with the Falcon program as well. Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
IT'S A THIN LINE...
The margin between winning and losing is very slim in the MAC race ... the Falcons' two wins over the weekend vaulted BGSU from an eighth-place tie to a tie for third in the standings ... in fact, seven teams (third place through ninth place) are separated by just a single game entering this weekend's action.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons won a pair of MAC road matches ... BGSU won at Akron on Friday (Sept. 27) by a 2-1 score, then beat host Kent State, 1-0, two days later (Sept. 29) ... senior Jill Conover had a goal and an assist in the UA match, while freshman Britt Anderson's header proved to be the winning goal at KSU ... senior Erika Flanders earned the shutout in the latter match.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons, as mentioned, are 5-4-1 overall and 3-2 in MAC play ... BGSU has scored 12 goals and allowed 14 through the first 10 contests ... sophomore Kristy Coppes has scored five of the Falcons' goals this year, and leads the team with 10 points ... three players - freshmen Leah Eggleton and Julie Trundle and senior Jill Conover - have five points apiece, while senior Susan Wallace has four ... senior Erika Flanders has played all 920 minutes in goal, and has 60 saves and a goals-against average of 1.37.
THE OPPONENTS
Marshall will enter Friday's match at BGSU with an overall record of 4-3-1, and the Thundering Herd has started MAC play with a league record of 1-1-1 ... last weekend, MU stepped outside of league action and posted a 3-1 win over visiting Evansville Sunday (Sept. 29) ... the Herd has a two-match win streak, beginning with a 6-1 win over Northern Illinois (Sept. 22) ... freshman Ashley Schillig has scored seven of Marshall's 16 goals this fall, and leads the team with 15 points ... senior Lindsey Jayjack and freshman Jaime Gruber each have a team-high four assists ... freshman Sarah Barber and sophomore Ashleigh Woods have each spent time in goal ... Ohio saw a six-match unbeaten streak come to an end with a pair of losses last weekend ... the 'Cats fell on the road to Miami (3-2, Sept. 27) and Ball State (2-0, Sept. 29) ... UC downed TCU (3-0, Sept. 27) and Houston (1-0, Sept. 29) ... senior Amy Simonson leads the team in both goals (five) and points (10), while junior Tasha Wagner has a team-high five assists and seven points ... in goal, sophomore Tracy Hale has started all 10 matches and has a GAA of 0.79 ... last year, UC recorded a school-record 20 wins, going 20-4-0 with a perfect 10-0 C-USA mark ... THE SERIES
BGSU leads Marshall, 2-1-1, in the all-time series between the schools ... the Herd's lone victory came last year, a 3-1 decision in Huntington (Oct. 19, 2001) ... Kristy Coppes had the BG goal ... the Falcons won the only previous home match vs. MU, a 1-0 overtime victory on a Jill Conover goal two years ago (Oct. 13, 2000) ... BGSU posted a 2-0 road win in 1998 (Oct. 16), with Tracy Gleixner registering a goal and an assist ... the next year (Oct. 10, 1999), two BG goals late in regulation resulted in a 3-3 OT tie ... Conover had an assist in that match.
BGSU trails Ohio by a 4-0-1 count in that series, and the Falcons have yet to record a goal in the series ... OU is 2-0 at Cochrane Field, with a 4-0 win in 1997 (Oct. 26) and a 1-0 triumph two years ago (Oct. 15, 2000) ... Ohio won last year's meeting, 3-0 in Athens (Oct. 21, 2001), and the 'Cats also posted a 2-0 win in SE Ohio four years ago (Oct. 18, 1998) ... the teams battled to a 0-0, double-OT tie in 1999 (Oct. 8).

CONOVER CONTINUES TO CONVERT
Senior Jill Conover had a goal and an assist in Friday's (Sept. 27) 2-1 win at Akron, elevating her status on a number of BGSU career lists ... she assisted on the match-opening goal, then scored the winner, breaking a 1-1 tie with just 6:36 left in the second half ... Conover's assist was the 24th of her career, setting a new school record ... she had shared the record with Janice Mentrup (23 assists from 1997-2000) ... Conover now has 18 goals in her Falcon career, and is now tied with Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) for second on that BG list ... they trail only senior Tracy Gleixner (20) ... Conover increased her own school records in two other categories ... she now has 60 points as a Falcon, 12 points ahead of both Gleixner and Lisy ... Conover now has seven match-winning goals, two ahead of second-place Stephanie Heller (1997-2000).

TWO-SPORT PHENOM
Freshman Britt Anderson scored her first collegiate goal on a powerful header off a Carrie Richards corner kick Sunday (Sept. 29) ... that goal proved to be the difference in BGSU's 1-0 win at Kent State ... Anderson came to BG on a women's basketball scholarship, and will join that team upon the conclusion of the women's soccer season.
FLANDERS FLAWLESS VS. FLASHES
Senior goalkeeper Erika Flanders made eight saves to earn the shutout at Kent State ... for Flanders, the shutout was her third of the season and the school-record 13th of her career ... she holds the BGSU single-season shutout record with four in both 2000 and 2001, and holds every BGSU goalkeeping record ... Flanders now has two career shutouts vs. Kent State, and has blanked 11 other teams once each.
MAC WINS
BGSU's win at Kent State marked the Falcons' third MAC win of the season, surpassing the team's total for all of last year (2-9-1).
ROAD SWEET ROAD?
The Falcons are 3-0-1 in road matches this year, including a 3-0-0 mark in MAC road contests ... that ties the school record for conference road wins in a season (3-1-1 in 2000) ... last year, BGSU went 1-5-0 in league road play.
SUCCESS ON A SUNDAY
The Falcons' win at KSU ended a 15-match winless streak in matches played on a Sunday ... BGSU went 3-5-0 on Sundays in 2000, but lost the last four such matches of that season ... then, the Brown and Orange went 0-5-2 on Sundays last year, and had been 0-3-1 on that day this season prior to the win at KSU.
MEET THE NEW KIDS
The Falcons' starting lineup has featured at least three freshmen in every match this season, and at least four frosh in each of the last nine matches ... head coach Andy Richards has started six freshmen in five matches (Detroit, Toledo, Ball State, Akron and KSU), five freshmen twice (Eastern Illinois and Missouri) and four freshmen on two other occasions (Pitt and Miami) ... a total of nine different freshmen - every frosh field player but one - have started at least one match this year.

NOTING THE FALCONS
Of the 21 players who have seen action for the Falcons this season, a total of 18 have made at least two starts ... only four players -- senior Erika Flanders, junior Kasey Freeman, sophomore Beth Rieman and freshman Julie Trundle -- have started all 10 matches ... Trundle continues to lead the team in scoring in conference play, as all five of her points have come in MAC action ... sophomore Kristy Coppes, BG's leading scorer, left the Akron match due to injury just 7:38 into the first half and did not return ... she returned to action two days later at Kent State ... for the sixth and seventh consecutive contests, BG played without freshman forward Samantha Meister, who started the first three contests of the year before suffering a broken nose at Toledo (Sept. 6) ... the Falcons dealt KSU its first home loss of the 2002 season ... the Golden Flashes had been 4-0-1 at the Kent State Soccer Field prior to losing to BGSU ... the Falcons broke out new kits for the Akron match ... BG wore black long-sleeved shirts with "BGSU" on the front in orange, and orange numerals on the back ... the Falcons wore orange shorts with black numerals, and sported black socks ... BG wore orange shorts again on Sunday at KSU, and the Falcons are now 2-0 when wearing orange shorts this season ... as mentioned earlier, Flanders holds the school goalkeeping records in every career category, including wins (28), saves (396), shutouts (13) and goals-against average ... BGSU now has an all-time record of 41-58-8 as a varsity program ... all-time, the Brown and Orange squads have posted records of 20-28-2 at home, 17-24-6 on the road and 4-6-0 in neutral-site contests ... also, in the six-year history of the BGSU women's soccer program, the Falcons have a record of 5-7-8 in overtime matches ... BGSU is 2-0-6 in road OT matches all-time, and the Falcons have a 3-1-2 mark in overtime contests with non-MAC opponents.
