Falcons Play A Weekend Pair In Michigan

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, currently sitting in fourth place in the Mid-American Conference standings, faces a pair of tough tests in the state of Michigan this weekend.

The Falcons (6-6-1, 4-3-0 MAC) of head coach Andy Richards will travel north to take on Central Michigan University in a Friday (Oct. 11) match. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the CMU Soccer Field.
Following the CMU tilt, the Brown and Orange will play a Sunday (Oct. 13) match at Eastern Michigan. That contest is scheduled for a starting time of 1:00 p.m. at EMU's Scicluna Field. The Falcons are in the midst of a stretch which sees the team play four road contests in a five-match stretch.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his third year as a head coach, all at BGSU, and has an overall record of 23-26-4 heading into the Marshall match. Richards, who came to BG after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her third season with the Falcon program as well. Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
IT'S A CLOSE RACE ...
As most teams near the two-thirds mark of the MAC race, the Falcons are embroiled in the thick of things ... BGSU, as mentioned, is in fourth place ... the Falcons have 12 points, just a single point behind third-place Ohio (teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie) ... CMU is in fifth place, only a point behind BGSU ... Sunday's opponent, EMU, is in a three-way tie for seventh place with nine points ... in fact, seven teams (third place through the three teams deadlocked for seventh) are separated by just six points entering this weekend's action.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons went 1-2 on the week, and split a pair of MAC home matches ... BGSU defeated Marshall on Friday (Oct. 4) by a 3-0 score at Cochrane Field ... sophomore Kristy Coppes scored two of BGSU's goals, and senior Jill Conover had the other goal ... senior Erika Flanders earned the shutout ... the Falcons lost a 1-0 overtime contest to visiting Ohio Sunday (Oct. 6), then dropped a 2-0 decision to host Cincinnati Tuesday (Oct. 8).
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons, as mentioned, are 6-6-1 overall and 4-3 in MAC play ... BGSU has scored 15 goals and allowed 17 through the first 13 contests ... sophomore Kristy Coppes has scored seven of the Falcons' goals this year, and leads the team with 14 points ... senior Jill Conover has scored seven points, while freshmen Leah Eggleton and Julie Trundle have five points apiece ... THE OPPONENTS
Central Michigan will enter Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 4-4-3, and the Chippewas have a MAC record of 3-2-2 ... last weekend, CMU posted victories over the conference's top-two teams ... the Chippewas went to Miami and recorded a 3-2 win Friday ... then, CMU returned home to down Ball State, 2-1, Sunday ... sophomore Olina Vidarsdottir scored a pair of goals, including the match winner, at Miami, and also had the match-winning goal vs. BSU en route to earning MAC Player-of-the-Week honors ... Vidarsdottir leads the team with six goals and 15 points ... senior Emilie VilleMonte has scored three goals, and classmate Sabrina Borgquist has three assists to tie Vidarsdottir for the team lead in that category ... junior Kari Alexander has played every minute in goal, and has 55 saves and a 1.63 GAA ... last year, Central went 12-9-1 overall and finished fourth in the MAC with a league ledger of 8-4-0 in the MAC ... the Chippewas advanced to the championship match of the 2001 MAC Tournament ... head coach Mark Salisbury is 46-39-6 in his fifth year in Mount Pleasant ... he is 104-84-14 in his 11th season as a collegiate head coach ... the team's web address is www.cmuchippewas.com.
Eastern Michigan entered the week with an overall mark of 5-8-0, and the Eagles will take a 3-4-0 MAC mark into a Friday match vs. Toledo ... EMU saw a three-match win streak come to an end with a pair of losses last weekend ... the Eagles fell on the road to BSU (2-0, Oct. 4) and Miami (2-1, Oct. 6) ... junior Jessica Hupe leads the team in goals and points, and ranks second in the MAC in both categories ... Hupe has scored 11 of the Eagles' 18 goals this fall, and has 24 points ... senior Courtney Sindelar is second on the team with seven points, and has three assists to tie junior Abi Morrell for the team lead ... in goal, senior Aryn McCumber and sophomore Nikki Allen have shared time ... McCumber has a 3-4-0 record and a 1.29 GAA, while Allen is 1-4-0 with a 3.41 GAA ... THE SERIES
BGSU and Central Michigan are tied, 2-2-0, in the all-time series between the schools ... BGSU has won the lone previous match in Mt. Pleasant, 3-1, two years ago (Sept. 15, 2000) ... Jill Conover had a goal and two assists in that match, while Tracy Gleixner also found the back of the net ... the other three meetings, a 4-3 BGSU win (Oct. 1, 1998) and CMU triumphs of 2-1 (Oct. 17, 1999) and 4-1 (Oct. 14, 2001), all came at Cochrane Field ... Gleixner had a goal and an assist in the 1998 meeting, while Kristy Coppes scored BG's lone goal last year, off a Jenny Berlovan assist.
BGSU trails Eastern Michigan by a 4-3-0 count in that series ... five of the previous seven matches have been held in Ypsilanti, with the Falcons holding a 3-2-0 edge in those contests ... last year, the visiting Eagles posted a 3-0 win (Oct. 12) ... in the only other match at BG, EMU recorded a 4-2 win (Oct. 15, 1999) ... in the first four years (1997-2000) after the MAC instituted the sport of women's soccer, the Eagles posted a 19-3-3 home record against league schools (regular season and tournament), and all three losses came at the hands of the Falcons ... ROAD SWEET ROAD?
The Falcons' loss at Cincinnati Tuesday was the team's first road setback of the season ... BGSU is now 3-1-1 in away matches, including a 3-0-0 mark in MAC play ... last year, BGSU went 1-5-0 in league road action.
CONOVER, COPPES CONVERT
Sophomore Kristy Coppes had two goals and senior Jill Conover added the other score in Friday's (Oct. 4) 3-0 win over Marshall ... in the process, the two strikers continued their climb up the BGSU career charts ... Conover increased her own school record for career points to 62 ... Conover now has 19 career goals, just one shy of the BGSU record held by senior Tracy Gleixner ... Coppes also has 19 career goals to tie Conover for second on that list ... her two goals vs. MU moved her past Michelle Lisy (18 from 1997-2000) on that school chart ... Coppes reached that 19-goal plateau after just 30 career matches ... Conover also holds the school career record with seven match-winning goals, two ahead of second-place Stephanie Heller (1997-2000).
FLANDERS FLAWLESS VS. HERD
Senior goalkeeper Erika Flanders made seven saves to earn the shutout vs. Marshall ... for Flanders, the shutout was her fourth of the season, tying her own school record ... she has posted four shutouts in each of the last three seasons ... Flanders, who holds every BGSU goalkeeping record, now has 14 shutouts in her career ... she has two career shutouts against both Marshall and Kent State, and has blanked 10 other teams once each.
MORE ON FLANDERS
Erika Flanders, as mentioned, had seven saves in the Marshall match, moving her past the 400-save mark for her career ... after the Ohio and UC matches, the senior now has a career total of 417 saves ... the second-place GK on the BGSU career list, Kit Gazley, had a total of 76 saves.
ANOTHER LONG SHUTOUT STREAK
Ohio's match-ending goal Sunday (Oct. 6) snapped yet another lengthy shutout streak for Erika Flanders ... the goal ended her streak at 330:24, a school record ... Flanders broke her old record of 266:55, set from Sept. 20-Oct. 9, 2001 ... the BGSU senior now owns the top six shutout streaks in school history.
MAC WINS
BGSU's win vs. Marshall marked the Falcons' fourth MAC win of the season, doubling the team's total for all of last year (2-9-1) ... the school record for conference victories in a season is five in 2000 (5-5-1).
START ME UP
Freshman Britt Anderson drew her first collegiate start in the Marshall contest ... all 10 freshman field players on the BGSU roster have started at least one match this season ... in fact, of the 21 players who have seen action for the Falcons this year, a total of 19 have made at least one start.
MEET THE NEW KIDS
The Falcons' starting lineup has featured at least three freshmen in each of this season's 13 matches, and at least four frosh in each of the last 12 matches ... head coach Andy Richards has started six freshmen in five matches (Detroit, Toledo, Ball State, Akron and KSU), five freshmen three times (Eastern Illinois, Missouri and Marshall) and four freshmen on four occasions (Pitt, Miami, Ohio and Cincinnati) ... a total of 10 different freshmen - every frosh field player - have started at least one match this year.

BGSU's streak of three consecutive MAC wins (Akron, Kent State, Marshall) tied the school record, set in the 2000 season ... BG's three MAC losses this season have come to the three teams (Miami, Ball State and Ohio) currently ahead of the Brown and Orange in the league standings ... the Falcons, currently in fourth place, were picked to finish ninth in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll ... in addition to the shutout streak record set by Erika Flanders, the Falcons also set a new team mark in that category ...
