BUFFALO, N.Y. - Freshman Samantha Meister scored just 2:13 into overtime as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team posted a road win over the University at Buffalo Sunday (Oct. 20). The Mid-American Conference match was held at UB's RAC Field.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 9-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in MAC play. The host Bulls drop to 4-7-5 and 3-5-2, respectively.
Another freshman, Britt Anderson, scored the Falcons' other goal as the Brown and Orange rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit.
UB's Nicole Olszewski got the hosts on the board at the 22:39 mark. The Bulls were awarded a penalty kick, and BGSU senior goalkeeper Erika Flanders saved Olszewski's try. But, Olszewski scored on the rebound to give UB a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until just under 20 minutes remained in the match. Anderson converted a header after a UB turnover. The goal, at 70:08, was Anderson's third of the year and her second in as many matches.
Flanders and UB's Anna-Lesa Calvert would keep the opponents off the scoreboard throughout the remainder of regulation. But, Meister gave the Falcons the win early in the OT session. Freshman Leslie Dawley and sophomore Kristy Coppes drew assists on the winning goal.
Flanders was credited with four saves in goal, while Calvert made one stop.
"We had a very good result today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "Obviously, it was a great game in that we came back from a one-goal deficit and won.
"But, it was also a great game in that we rose above a lot of adversity. It was a physical game, but we really played with a lot of discipline and a good work rate.
"Britt Anderson had a nice diving header on our first goal. On the overtime goal, Leslie Dawley battled well to win the ball, and served a cross. Kristy did a wonderful job of flicking a header behind her to Sam Meister. Sam settled the ball, and then finished, sparking a mass celebration.
"It was an excellent victory, and a good experience for us, in that we really battled when things weren't going well for us. Now, our emphasis turns from qualifying for the postseason to finishing as high as we possibly can, and trying to earn a home berth for the first round."
The Falcons now return home for the final two MAC matches of the regular season. BGSU will host Western Michigan in a Friday (Oct. 25) contest, and will meet Northern Illinois in Sunday (Oct. 27) action. The WMU match is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field, while the NIU contest is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
