THIS WEEK
After averaging nearly three matches per week over the last month and a half, the Bowling Green volleyball team (6-15 overall, 1-8 MAC) will have a short weekend of action as it plays only one match during the upcoming week. The Falcons will face off against the Chippewas of Central Michigan this Friday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Currently, the Chips are 4-3 in the Mid-American Conference and 8-12 overall. Head coach Elaine Piha returns four starters from last year's squad that finished 6-20 overall.
Leading CMU are junior setter Shaleene Glombowski and middle hitters Kendra DeVries and Liz Passen. Glombowski is averaging 11.99 assists-per-game, a mark good enough for second in the MAC (MAC matches only). DeVries is ninth in the conference in hitting percentage as she is averaging .300 while Passen is ranked fourth in the same category with a .339 average. The two are also ranked in the league in blocks-per-game, 1.17 average. Passen is leading the MAC in service-aces-per-game, averaging 0.62. BG leads the overall series 18-16.
LAST WEEK
BG played its first two road contests in nearly three weeks as they travelled to Muncie, Indiana and Oxford, Ohio to take on Ball State and Miami last Friday (Oct. 18) and Saturday (Oct. 19).
Friday night, the Falcons dropped their eighth MAC match of the season to BSU in three games, 18-30, 28-30, 19-30. Junior Susie Norris led BG in hitting and digging with eight kills and 14 digs. Freshman outside hitter Emily Manser notched seven kills and nine digs for the Falcons. Redshirt sophomore Bridget Protas tallied five block assists and one solo for a total of six blocks to lead both teams while fellow classmate Amber Mareski dished out 21 assists. BG has not beaten Ball State since the 1992 season.
However, Saturday night's match vs. Miami was a different story. The Falcons showed their desire and determination to get their first league win as they took a tight game one, 32-30. The RedHawks came back in game two, winning 30-26, but they could not hold off the Oranage and Brown. Bowling Green took games three and four, 30-28, 31-29, to earn its first MAC victory of 2002.
Sophomore middle hitter Protas led both teams in kills with 19. The redshirt also tallied six blocks, three solos and three assists, to total 12 for the weekend. Norris notched her 12th double-double performance of 2002 with 12 kills and 15 digs while Kristin Gamby also pulled double duty slamming down 10 kills and picking up 17 digs in the backcourt.
VAN DE WALLE WINS 365TH, 170TH
Falcon head coach Denise Van De Walle earned her 365th career victory and her 170th Mid-American Conference victory over the weekend with a win over Miami on Saturday, October 19. The dean of MAC mentors is in her 20th season at the helm of the BG program and has compiled an overall record of 365-242 (.601).
Van De Walle became the first-ever coach to amass 350 career wins at a MAC school, reaching that plateau in the Falcons' Oct. 20, 2001 win over Marshall...the team's 21 wins last season enabled her to become the winningest coach in league history...Van De Walle's total of 170 MAC wins through last week's matches ranks her third all-time on that list.
FALCON STAFF
Jeff Belmonte (Aquinas '89) is in his first season with the Falcon program...Belmonte was named assistant coach in March of 2002...Sean Huiet is in his third season with the BG volleyball program, and his second as an assistant coach.
