BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Erika Flanders is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Flanders, a senior goalkeeper on the BGSU women's soccer team, allowed just one goal as the Falcons won a pair of matches last weekend.
Flanders, a native of Mason, Ohio, was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 22)
She made five saves in a 3-0 win over Valparaiso Friday (Oct. 18), and had four stops in a 2-1 overtime win at Buffalo two days later (Oct. 20). The Valpo match marked her sixth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career, both school records.
In fact, Flanders holds every goalkeeping record -- single-match, single-season and career -- in BGSU history. She now has 103 saves this year and 439 in her career. Flanders has more career saves than all of the other goalies in school history combined (280).
This season, Flanders has played every minute of every match, and she is on pace to break her own record for single-season goals-against average.
The win over Buffalo clinched a MAC Tournament berth for the Falcons, now 9-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the league. BGSU, picked to finish ninth in the MAC in the preseason coaches poll, currently sits in fourth place. BG has set school records for MAC wins and points (19) in a season.
Flanders, BGSU's 2002 team captain, maintains a 3.27 cumulative grade point average as an art education major.
