DAYTON, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team posted yet another road win, defeating Wright State University by a 3-1 score Friday night (Nov. 1). The non-conference match was held at WSU's Alumni Field.
With the victory, the Falcons finish the regular season with an overall record of 11-7-2. BGSU's win at WSU sets a new single-season record for wins. The host Raiders drop to 5-9-4 on the season.
Freshman Keeley Dayton got the Brown and Orange on the board, scoring off an assist from classmate Samantha Meister at the 31:42 mark.
"Sam played a long ball that split the defense," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "Keeley beat the final defender and finished with the outside of her right foot.
"It was a very swift and decisive counterattack."
Sophomore Kristy Coppes doubled the lead for the visitors with a goal at 74:40. Freshman Julie Trundle picked up the assist on the goal.
"Julie crossed the ball to Kristy from the left side," said Richards. "Kristy faked a right-footed shot, then dragged the ball inside the defender. Then, she finished the goal by putting it across the 'keeper with a left-footed goal.
"It was a very instinctive finish, and showed a lot of composure. It was the kind of goal that not a lot of players can score."
Then, with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Meister got on the scoreboard, with sophomore Beth Rieman earning an assist.
"Beth Rieman picked up the ball on the edge of the 18 (penalty area) after an attempted Wright State clear. Beth knocked it back in, and Sam finished from close range."
WSU spoiled the shutout bid of BGSU senior Erika Flanders with 1:30 remaining in the second half, as Kim Chianese found the back of the net.
The Falcons held an 11-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Flanders made two saves on the night, while WSU 'keeper Emily Flohre had four stops.
"It was a shame we didn't get the shutout, but getting the win is the most important thing," said Richards. "It was a good performance and a good result. We really had to work hard to get the result against a pretty good Wright State team.
"It was their 'Senior Night,' and they came out with a lot of emotion. Keeley's goal really took the wind out of their sails.
"We talked at halftime about having that killer instinct, and getting that second and third goal. We did a tremendous job of following that plan in the second half.
"We were disappointed after the Northern Illinois game (BG lost after leading, 2-0, with 20 minutes remaining). We felt that some people who saw the score might think that our 7-0 win over Western Michigan two days earlier was a fluke. Hopefully, now, people will feel that the loss was the fluke, rather than the win.
"We are playing very well right now, and coming together nicely. We wanted to go to the postseason, and now we look to build upon this and continue this momentum into Tuesday's match."
BGSU now readies for the first home Mid-American Conference Tournament match in school history. The Falcons, seeded fourth for the league tourney, will face the fifth-seeded University at Buffalo in Tuesday's (Nov. 5) quarterfinal round. Kickoff time for that match is 2:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
