BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Quotes from the two head coaches following the BGSU-Youngstown State women's basketball game Friday night...
BGSU COACH CURT MILLER:
"It was a good opener. But, like in cards, you've got to play the hand that you're dealt. If you would have asked me in August how the season would go, we were very confident with our starting lineup of Lindsay Austin, Kim Griech, Stefanie Wenzel, Fran (Miller) and Pam Brown. Now, we're in our first game and Lindsay is out after hurting her ankle yesterday in practice. Kim missed over six weeks, and is basically in her first week of practice. Stef is our one healthy starter; Miller, obviously, is not 100 percent and we played without Pam Brown."
"With that being said, in my whole card analogy, we're not going to fold. We've got to get out there and play, and I was really pleased with our effort tonight. We had a freshman (Molly Martin) running the point for over 20 minutes in her first collegiate game. You have a natural two guard (Megan Jerome), who barely gets a rep in practice at the point, playing a lot of time at point guard for us. I was really proud of our kids. We gave ourselves a chance to win down the stretch."
"To their (YSU's) credit, they made the big play. The kid that made the big play (Jessica Olmstead) made two 'threes' all last year. She stepped up and made three tonight, but a big one with less than a minute to go. That shows a lot of guts and courage; I give that kid a lot of credit. Also, she had the assignment of guarding Francine Miller for the majority of the game. She is the player of the game tonight."
(On the four freshmen:)
"I'm very excited about that freshman class. We didn't play them as many minutes as we did in the exhibition, but all four were productive and did not play scared. Marisa Smith has a huge future in front of her. Molly (Martin) led our team tonight, and did a great job. That is not an easy situation to be put in ... but she played great. Jill (Lause) is just a big presence for us, and gives us something different. She's still adjusting to the speed and strength of the game, but is very offensively talented and played hard when she was in. Britt Anderson still has soccer plays on her mind ... we'll get her in there more and more; I think she can be a difference-maker for us. I'm really pleased in how we're progressing with that freshman class."
"It's not often that a coach is begging for a break when the season hasn't started yet, but we can't get to Monday fast enough, because we'll have 10 days (between games) to get people off of their feet and try to get healthy."
YSU COACH ED DiGREGORIO:
"It's always nice to win on the road when you don't expect a great deal. We've been playing with eight or nine young ladies in practice; we've had a lot of injuries, and the kids overcame those injuries. I think we can be a real good ballclub; we just have to get well, play a little tougher and do a lot of work in practice so we can get that chemistry."
"We knew we had to stop Miller. Francine has been one of my favorites for four years. We knew we had to take those two kids (Miller and Stefanie Wenzel) out of the game. I thought we did a great job on Wenzel, and we did a pretty good job on Miller. She's a bonafide player; I'd take her any time."
"The Bowling Green kids -- I'm really proud of them. The way they hung in there; they played under control with a great deal of poise and patience. And, that's what we have to teach our young kids. When he (Curt Miller) doesn't have his four seniors in there, they're not as formidable, because the experience is lacking. But, they're gonna be a good ballclub before the year is over."
