Falcons Begin Four-Game Homestand, Six-Game Stand in Ohio
The Falcons return to BGSU Ice Arena for a two-game series with Alaska Fairbanks, beginning this Friday, Jan. 3, at 7:05 p.m. The next four Falcon games (Jan. 3-4 and 10-11) are at home, and their next six contests are in the state of Ohio (Jan. 16-17 at Ohio State).
BGSU vs. Alaska Fairbanks (7-7-2 overall, 4-6-2 CCHA)
Alaska Fairbanks makes the long trek to the lower-48 this weekend for a two-game series at BGSU. The Nanooks have played at BGSU Ice Arena 12 times with Bowling Green holding a 7-4-1 advantage. BGSU is undefeated in UAF's last four visits (3-0-1) with the last loss to the Nanooks at home coming on Nov. 14, 1998 (6-5). Overall, however, UAF has won three-straight vs. the Falcons, all in Fairbanks. Eight of the last 13 matchups have been decided by one goal or less.
Falcons Drop Two Games at Dodge Holiday Classic
BGSU lost two games at last weekend's Dodge Holiday Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota at Mariucci Arena (Dec. 27-28). The Falcons nearly pulled off a major upset of #6-ranked Boston College in the first game, scoring three unanswered goals in the first period before allowing three unanswered goals in the third period for the 6-5 loss. It was the first time in three trips that BGSU lost its first game at the tournament. The next night, the Falcons fell to #16 Yale, 5-1, despite out-shooting the Bulldogs 45-28 and taking a season-low four penalties.
JR Captain D'Arcy McConvey Named All-Tournament
JR captain D'Arcy McConvey had his first three-point game of the season on Dec. 27 vs. #6 Boston College with a PPG and two assists. He notched three three-point games last season as a sophomore. McConvey added an assist on BGSU's lone goal on Saturday vs. Yale to earn a spot on the Dodge Holiday Classic All-Tournament team (1-3-4). McConvey joins former Falcons Martin Jiranek-forward and Angelo Libertucci-goalie (1991) and Brad Holzinger-forward (1995) as the only other players to be named to Dodge Holiday Classic All-Tournament team.
Recent Bowling Green Games...
Dec. 28 - Yale 5, BGSU 1
Despite out-shooting the Bulldogs 45-28 and taking a season-low four penalties, BGSU lost to Yale in the third-place game at the Dodge Holiday Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., 5-1. Yale scored three of its five goals in the first period for an early 3-0 lead. The lone Falcon goal came in the second period by SO Steve Brudzewski who netted his sixth goal of the season. D'Arcy McConvey assisted on the goal for his fourth point of the tournament. BGSU was 0-for-3 on the power play while Yale was 0-for-2.
Dec. 27 - #6 Boston College 6, BGSU 5 BGSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period over the sixth-ranked Eagles of BC on Dec. 27. However, BC scored three unanswered goals of its own in the third period for the 6-5 win. JR Mark Wires began the Falcon scoring with his first goal in four games at 3:12 in the first period. SR Tyler Knight followed with two goals in a span under five minutes, including a power-play tally. D'Arcy McConvey earned an assist on each of Knight's goals then scored himself just :22 seconds into the third period with a PPG. Steve Brudzewski would score BGSU's final goal at 9:03 in the third period. JR Kevin Bieksa had two assists in the game which saw the Eagles hold a 43-40 shot advantage over BGSU. Both teams were 2-for-6 on the power play. SO Jordan Sigalet had 37 saves for the Falcons.
Wires Gets Back Into Scoring Column
JR Mark Wires broke a four-game scoreless streak with BGSU's first goal of the game vs. #6 Boston College on Dec. 27, and added an assist. Wires' last point prior to Friday night was Nov. 8 vs. Michigan (goal). Wires is tied for the team lead in goals scored with six (6-3-9).
Knight Sets Career Mark vs. #6 BC
SR Tyler Knight scored back-to-back goals in the first period to register the first multiple-goal game of his Falcon career. He also scored his first PPG since his freshman season when he netted three. Knight is just the second Falcon this year with two goals in a game, joining Steve Brudzewski (Oct. 11 vs. WMU).
