BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's soccer coach Andy Richards and his assistant, Ashlee Orr, have announced the addition of 10 student-athletes to the program. Molly Bremen (Urbandale, Iowa/Valley), Leslie Dawley (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Keeley Dayton (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro), Leah Eggleton (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield), Allie Failor (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), Samantha Meister (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest), Megan Rapp (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), Natalie Sampiller (Batavia, Ill./Batavia), Julie Trundle (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Ashley Wentzel (Mason, Ohio/Mason) will join the Falcons this fall.
"We're very excited about the entire group of signees," said Richards. "If you look through the resumes of our new players, there is a lot of quality in the group. They will bring some much-needed quality and depth, and enhance what we've already got.
"We have some fine student-athletes from throughout the state, and our influence is beginning to spread throughout the region. Ashlee and I are excited to add these kids to our program, and we can't wait for the fall to arrive."
Bremen, a defender/midfielder, played on the Iowa State Olympic Developmental Program team which was the 1999 Region II Champion and the America Cup Champion. In 2000, the team was the Norway Cup Champion and participated in the ODP National Tournament. Her Iowa United team was State Cup Champions from 1998-2001, gained third place in the 1999 Region II Tournament, and won the Raleigh Shootout Tournament in 2000. Bremen's Valley High School team earned third place in the 2000 state tournament. She was an all-league first-team selection as a senior.
"Molly brings ODP, club and high school experience to the Falcons," said Richards. '"Versatile enough to play either as a defender or in midfield, she also brings a tough tackling and accurate passing style to the team. Her outgoing and vibrant personality will help her to become a leader within the group."
Dawley, a midfielder/forward, played four years for Thomas Worthington H.S., helping her club to Ohio Capitol Conference titles in 1999 and 2001. The latter year, the team also finished second in the district.
"Leslie brings great pace and agility to the Falcons, together with an ability to play on either flank in the midfield, or as a striker," said Richards. "Her offensive skills are exciting to watch and she will undoubtedly be a key figure in the team. Leslie's contribution as an attacking player is sure to be apparent both in and out of Mid-American Conference play, and her influence will only get stronger with time."
Dayton, also a midfielder/forward, played for the Arizona State ODP team from 1999-2001. She played club ball with the Sereno Golden Eagles, winning four state championships and advancing to the Far West Regional semifinals in 2000 and quarterfinals in 2001. A three-time MVP during her last three seasons at Canyon Del Oro H.S., Dayton earned all-state honors in each of her last two seasons, and was selected to the all-city team three times.
"Keeley, highly recruited by many schools, will add skill and creativity to the Bowling Green team this fall," said Richards. "She can play in the midfield or as a forward, and her vision and technical skills in those areas of the field will enable her to unlock the opponents' defense and be an impact player."
Eggleton, a midfielder, was an all-league performer for Fairfield H.S. in each of her final two seasons, and also earned all-city and all-county honors during her career. Eggleton also earned academic all-conference honors in each of the last three years.
"Leah's toughness and competitive nature will be a huge asset to the midfield department,' said Richards. "Her ability to win the ball, keep it, and distribute it in a variety of fashions is exciting to watch and a style that will inspire those around her. Academically, Leah excels in the same way she does on the soccer field."
Failor, a goalkeeper, has played within the Ohio North ODP system. She earned three letters at Perrysburg H.S., and was a two-time All-Northern Lakes League selection. She also earned all-district honors twice and was an academic all-state performer as a senior. Her PHS teams won the district crown in 1999 and finished second the following year.
"Allie is a goalkeeper from the local community who has shown tremendous determination to play at the Division I level," said Richards. "She has a strong soccer background within the Ohio North ODP system and has received several high school honors. In addition to her bravery and agility, the BGSU women's soccer program is excited to recruit such a great personality."
Meister, a midfielder, has played for the Kolping Bengals club team, which has won 13 consecutive league titles and been a part of five OSYSA State Cup Champions. At Northwest H.S., she has helped the team to three Fort Ancient Valley Conference champions. Meister was a two-time All-FAVC First-Team honoree and earned All-Southwest Ohio honors twice as well. Additionally, she was a third-team all-state selection as a senior.
"Samantha joins Bowling Green with a rich history of success at the club level," said Richards. "Her physical prowess and knowledge of the game will add greatly to the midfield. The coaching staff expect her to be a high impact player on the team and believe she has the ability to be a huge influence within the MAC."
Rapp, a defender, was a four-year starter at Bishop Watterson H.S., and has also played for the Ohio South ODP team for three years. She was a four-year team captain of the Ohio Premier South program. At Bishop Watterson, Rapp was a three-time All-Columbus Catholic League selection, and was named to the all-district team twice.
"Megan will bring a wealth of experience to the Bowling Green defense this fall," said Richards. "She is very highly regarded within the state of Ohio and has the ability to play either as a marking back or a sweeper. She will add experience, skill and pace to the Falcons' back-line. Megan gains notoriety as being the first recruit to verbally commit to BGSU for the 2002 season."
Sampiller, a defender, was a four-year starter for Batavia H.S., and has been a member of the Illinois State ODP team since 1999. She also has experience with the ODP regional pool team. Sampiller is a three-time all-sectional, all-conference and all-area selection for BHS, and helped her club team, Campton United, to the State Cup championship in 2001.
"Natalie's natural leadership abilities and highly competitive spirit will bring energy and enthusiasm to the team," said Richards. "The coaching staff look forward to her influence over the next four years. Natalie was a greatly sought after recruit and will add steel and character to the team's defense. Her indomitable character and exuberant personality will make her a very popular member of the team."
Trundle, a midfielder, was a member of the Ohio North ODP State team from 1998-2000, and has been a starter for the Internationals Soccer Club since 1992. She helped the latter team to six Ohio North state championships, a regional title and two region runner-up finishes. At Medina H.S., Trundle earned all-conference and all-county honors three times apiece, and made both the Greater Cleveland and Greater Akron All-Star teams in 2001. MHS won three league crowns and captured the 2001 district championship.
"Julie's specialist ability to play wide left in midfield will add immeasurably to the attacking options of the Falcons this fall and will significantly enhance their style of play," said Richards. "Her vision when passing, her ability to take defenders on in one-versus-one situations, and her knack of rarely giving the ball away will make Julie a tremendous asset to the team and an impact player in all situations."
Wentzel, a midfielder/forward, was was a three-year starter at Mason High School, helping the team to a 2001 district title. She was a two-time All-Fort Ancient Valley Conference selection, and earned all-area honors in 2001.
"Ashley's speed and technical abilities make her a threat to opponents, both in wide and central attacking positions," said Richards. "The Falcons will look to her to bring pace and cool finishing in front of goal. The process of recruiting Ashley to Bowling Green was helped by her long-standing love of the color orange and the coaching staff are excited to see her perform in the school colors over the next four years."
The Falcons posted an overall record of 7-10-2 and a 2-9-1 MAC mark in 2001. BGSU loses eight seniors off that 2001 squad.
