Falcons Begin Final Home Stretch
Bowling Green begins its final home stretch of the 2001-02 season by hosting Lake Superior State University this weekend (Feb. 15-16) at BGSU Ice Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 faceoffs. The Lakers sit three points behind the Falcons in CCHA standings. BGSU ends its home-schedule next week vs. Northern Michigan (Feb. 22-23).
BGSU Versus Lake Superior (7-20-1 overall, 4-17-1 CCHA)
When Bowling Green hosts Lake Superior this weekend, it will be the fourth of five consecutive opponents from the state of Michigan that BGSU plays. BGSU is 63-51-4 all-time against the Lakers and split a series in Sault Ste. Marie earlier this season (3-2 win, 2-3 loss). The Falcons are 36-18-2 at home vs. LSSU, including 7-3 in the last 10 home games. BGSU has won four-straight at home against the Lakers.
Head Coach Buddy Powers
Buddy Powers (Boston University '75) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Falcons. Powers has an overall record of 253-215-40 (.537 pct.) in 13 years as head coach at Bowling Green (1994-SA), Rensselaer (1989-94) and Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89). The Jan. 5 game vs. Princeton was Powers' 500th as a head coach. His record with the Brown and Orange stands at 133-144-25 (.482 pct.). Appointed the head coach at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994, Powers is the fourth head coach in the program's history. It is his 14th season overall on the Falcon bench after serving six years as assistant coach under Jerry York from 1982-88.
Falcons Drop Two-Game Series at Ferris State
Bowling Green lost two games at Ferris State last weekend in CCHA competition, 5-2 and 6-3. FR goalie Jordan Sigalet entered Friday night's game in the second period in relief of starter Tyler Masters. Sigalet allowed two goals on 25 shots faced in 40 minutes. SO Mark Wires scored BGSU's second short-handed goal of the year to put the Falcons on the scoreboard. FR Denis White scored the other BG goal. On Saturday, Sigalet ended with a career-high 48 saves on 54 shots faced in a 6-3 setback. Wires added his second goal in as many nights while SR Scott Hewson and SO Kevin Bieksa gave BGSU its first power play goals in 36 attempts. Sigalet ended with 71 saves in 100 minutes on the weekend.
Day Misses First Career Game
Bowling Green was without the services of SR captain Greg Day for the first time in his career. Day suffered a laceration above his left ankle in the third period of Friday night's game vs. Ferris State and did not play Saturday, Feb. 9. It snapped a string of 146-consecutive games played by Day. BGSU's school record for consecutive games played is held by Wayne Wilson (165 from 1980-84).
Wires Nets Goals in Back-to-Back Games
SO forward Mark Wires scored goals in back-to-back games this weekend for the first time since Oct. 20 and 26 vs. Northern Michigan and Ohio State. The last goal by Wires prior to Friday was on Nov. 23 at Lake Superior (16 games).
Current Point Streaks
SO forward Mark Wires and SR defenseman Marc Barlow each have two-game point streaks heading into this weekend's series with Lake Superior. Wires netted goals in both games last week at Ferris State while Barlow had two assists on the weekend. Wires' career-best was two games set earlier this season (Oct. 20-26) while Barlow had a four-game point streak from Nov. 9-17 (2-4--6).
