Toronto, Ontario - Bowling Green State University's Taylor Christie was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 6th round (195th pick overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in Toronto, Ontario, on Sunday, June 23. Christie will be a sophomore defenseman on this year's Falcon hockey team under first-year head coach Scott Paluch.
Christie, a native of Toronto, Ontario, played in 37 of 40 games as a freshman last season for the Falcons. He finished with two assists (0-2--2) and had 16 penalties (40 PIM).
Christie becomes one of three Falcons on this year's team that has been drafted in the NHL Entry Draft. Junior defenseman Kevin Bieksa (Vancouver-fifth round) and sophomore goalie Jordan Sigalet (Boston-seventh round) were both drafted in the 2001 NHL Entry draft last summer.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder becomes the 61st Falcon all-time to be drafted in the NHL Draft and marked the seventh time in the last eight years that at least one BGSU player has been selected.
Also, two former Falcons are currently in the Colorado organization. Defensemen Rob Blake and Greg de Vries helped the Avalanche to the 2001 Stanley Cup and an appearance in the NHL Western Division finals this past season.
