BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team takes to the road once again for a pair of Mid-American Conference matches this weekend. The Falcons (3-4-1, 1-2-0 MAC) of head coach Andy Richards will head to Northeast Ohio for a Friday (Sept. 27) match against the University of Akron. Kickoff for that match is set for 7:00 p.m. at UA's Lee Jackson Field.

Following the UA match, the Brown and Orange will play a Sunday (Sept. 29) match vs. Kent State University, scheduled for a starting time of 1:00 p.m. at the Kent State Soccer Field. The KSU match completes an eight-match stretch in which BGSU plays six times away from home. All three teams - the Falcons, Akron and Kent State - have identical 3-4-1 records heading into the weekend's action. Next weekend, the Brown and Orange will return to Cochrane Field to host Marshall (Oct. 4) and Ohio (Oct. 6).
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his third year as a head coach, all at BGSU, and has an overall record of 20-24-4 heading into the Akron match. Richards, who came to BG after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her third season with the Falcon program as well. Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons dropped a pair of MAC matches at Cochrane Field ... defending conference tournament champion Miami posted a 3-0 win over the Falcons Friday (Sept. 20) ... on Sunday (Sept. 22), Ball State defeated BG by a 2-1 score ... sophomore Kristy Coppes scored the Falcons' goal in that match.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons, as mentioned, are 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in MAC play ... BGSU has scored nine goals and allowed 13 goals through the first eight contests ... sophomore Kristy Coppes has scored five of the Falcons' goals this year, and leads the team with 10 points ... freshman Leah Eggleton has five points on a goal and three assists, while senior Susan Wallace has four points and freshman Julie Trundle three ... senior Erika Flanders has played all 740 minutes in goal, and has 48 saves and a goals-against average of 1.58.
THE OPPONENTS
Akron will enter Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 3-4-1, and the Zips have a record of 0-3-1 in MAC play ... last weekend, UA faced the same opponents as the Falcons, losing home contests to Ball State (3-0, Sept. 20) and Miami (4-0, Sept. 22) ... Akron has a three-match losing streak after opening the season with a 3-1-1 record ... that five-match stretch included the team's first-ever point in MAC play, a 1-1 tie vs. Marshall ... freshman Elizabeth Riggs leads the team in goals (three) and points (seven), while sophomore Sarah Artuso's six points include a UA-best four assists ... sophomores Crystal Tabor and Meghan McCarthy have each spent time in goal ... Tabor has a 3-2-1 record and a 1.66 GAA ... Kent State will bring a 3-4-1 overall record into Friday's home match vs. Toledo ... the Golden Flashes are 1-2-1 in MAC action after a win and a tie at home last weekend ... KSU downed Eastern Michigan, 2-1 in overtime, before battling to a 2-2 deadlock with Central Michigan ... the Flashes enter the UT match with a 3-0-1 home record this year ... junior Lauren Covay leads the team with four goals and 10 points, closely followed by senior Bethany Sanker (three goals, eight points) ... freshman Ashley Bohinc has three goals on the year ... seniors Melissa Glyptis and Lindsey Mitchell have split the bulk of the time in goal ... THE SERIES
BGSU leads Akron, 1-0, in the all-time series between the schools ... Katie Piening had a goal and a pair of assists, and Erika Flanders earned the shutout as the host Falcons earned a 3-0 win last year (Oct. 5, 2001) ... Kristy Coppes had a pair of goals in that match, while Nikki Pucillo drew an assist in the win.
BGSU leads Kent State by a 3-2-1 count in that series, but the Flashes have won the last two meetings ... the teams will be meeting for the third time in Kent, with each squad having won one match there ... KSU downed BG by a 3-1 score two years ago in Kent (Oct. 22, 2000), and the Flashes posted a 1-0 OT victory at Cochrane Field last fall (Oct. 26, 2001) ... the Falcons recorded a pair of shutout wins in 1997, 1-0 in OT at Kent in the first-ever match for either program (Aug. 29, 1997), and 2-0 in BG on Oct. 17 ... the teams battled to a 1-1 tie the next year (Sept. 27, 1998), and the Falcons won a 2-0 decision on Sept. 15, 1999, with Jill Conover getting a goal and an assist and Flanders earning the shutout ... COPPES CONNECTS
Sophomore Kristy Coppes scored the Falcons' lone goal Sunday, on a nifty header vs. Ball State ... the goal, her fifth of the season, was the 17th of her young career, moving her back into a tie with senior Jill Conover on the school's career goals list ... they trail only senior Tracy Gleixner (20) and Michelle Lisy (18 from 1997-2000) ... Coppes now has 36 career points to move within one point of fourth-place Janice Mentrup (1997-2000) on that BGSU list.
MEET THE NEW KIDS
The Falcons' starting lineup has featured at least three freshmen in every match this season, and at least four frosh in each of the last seven matches ... head coach Andy Richards started six freshmen vs. both Detroit and Toledo, five against Eastern Illinois, four vs. Pitt and five against Missouri ... last weekend, four frosh started vs. Miami and six against Ball State ... newcomer Leslie Dawley made her first career start in the latter match, bringing the total of frosh who have started at least one match this season to nine.

NOTING THE FALCONS
Freshman Leslie Dawley responded well to earning her first collegiate start ... in that match, Sunday's Ball State contest, Dawley had four shot attempts and two shots on goal, leading the Falcons in each category ... of the 21 players who have seen action for the Falcons this season, a total of 18 have made at least one start ... only four players -- senior Erika Flanders, junior Kasey Freeman, sophomore Beth Rieman and freshman Julie Trundle -- have started all eight matches ... Trundle's assist vs. Ball State was the first of her collegiate career ... she leads the team in scoring in conference play, as all three of her points have come in MAC action ... she scored the lone goal of the match in the win at Toledo (Sept. 6) ... Flanders holds the school goalkeeping records in every career category, including wins (26), saves (384), shutouts (12) and goals-against average ... BGSU saw a total of 11 goals scored in the first two matches of the year ... in the last six matches, the Falcons and their opponents have combined for a total of 11 goals ... BGSU now has an all-time record of 39-58-8 as a varsity program ... all-time, the Brown and Orange squads have posted records of 20-28-2 at home, 15-24-6 on the road and 4-6-0 in neutral-site contests ... also, in the six-year history of the BGSU women's soccer program, the Falcons have a record of 5-7-8 in overtime matches ...
