TOLEDO, Ohio - Freshman Julie Trundle's first collegiate goal proved to be the match winner as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory at the University of Toledo Friday (Sept. 6). The match, the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, was held at UT's Scott Park.
Senior Erika Flanders made four saves to earn the shutout for the Falcons, now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in MAC action. The host Rockets dropped to 1-1 and 0-1, respectively.
Trundle's goal came after a BGSU free kick. Freshman Leah Eggleton played the ball to junior Carrie Richards, who took it down the right side of the pitch. Richards lofted a crossing ball to Trundle, who blooped it over UT goalkeeper Elise Donovan and into the right corner of the net at the 39:09 mark. The goal was the first of Trundle's brief collegiate career.
Flanders earned her first shutout of the season and the 11th of her career.
"It was another great result and another very solid and disciplined performance," said BGSU coach Andy Richards. "The discipline was the key.
"It was not as flamboyant or exciting as the Detroit game (a 5-2 BGSU win), perhaps, but sometimes, you've gotta do what you've gotta do. We respect Toledo very highly, and once we got that goal we had to defend. It wasn't just the back four players; everyone had to defend.
"There was great thought and creativity that won this game. It was a great cross by Carrie Richards, and a nice placement by Julie to get her first collegiate goal. We knew this would be a battle, and we knew that we would have to play intelligent soccer to get a win here.
"Even though we scored the goal in the first half, I thought we played better as a team in the second half. We expected UT to come at us hard in the second half, knowing they needed a goal. But, we were able to shut down their attack very well.
"Our depth is a big asset this season. We were able to rotate our forwards, and we were able to play a number of different people in all areas of the field. A player like Molly Bremen, who was injured for pretty much all of the preseason, came into the match for her first collegiate experience and gave us some good quality minutes. That's just one example of the depth we have this year.
"Any day Bowling Green beats Toledo is a great day."
The Falcons will head to Charleston, Ill., for a Sunday (Sept. 8) matchup with 2001 NCAA Tournament participant Eastern Illinois University.
