FALCONS START SECOND HALF OF MAC SEASON
The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, 10-7 overall and 6-3 in the MAC, begins the second half of the conference season in a familiar setting, on the road. This will be the 11th game away from Anderson Arena this season, and the sixth MAC road contest. BGSU has posted a 3-2 road mark in the league thus far.
BGSU IN FEBRUARY
Since the 1998-99 season, BGSU is 27-8 (77.1%) in the month of February, including an 11-6 (64.7%) mark on the road.
THE SERIES
BGSU leads the series 32-24 and have won the last three meetings in Rose Arena by a combined eight points. Last year, MAC Player of the year Keith McLeod exploded down the stretch to lead the Falcons to an 82-81 victory. Despite being in the same division for the first time, this will be the only meeting between the two teams, this season.
FALCONS LOOKING FOR 100TH VICTORY UNDER DAN DAKICH
BGSU coach Dan Dakich needs one win to become the fifth coach in Falcon history to win at least 100 games in his career. His 61.2 winning percentage is the second best in BGSU history behind Harold Anderson who won 65.5 % of his games. Anderson was the fastest BGSU coach to win 100 games in his career (135 games). With one more Falcon win, Dakich will be the second fastest BGSU bench boss to earn 100 victories in his career. John Weinert accomplished the feat in 188 games, Paul Landis in 197 games and Jim Larranaga in 199 games.
DEFENSE FUELS FALCONS' COMEBACK WIN AT OHIO
BGSU outscored Ohio 27-7 over the final 8:41 of regulation and the five-minute overtime to post a 66-60 overtime triumph in Athens. BGSU held OU to 2/16 (13%) shooting during that same time frame. BGSU also had seven offensive rebounds to the Bobcats' one down the stretch. The Falcons are second in the MAC in steals (8.5) and rank third in the conference in scoring defense (66.0), third in field goal percentage defense (42.8), and second in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.9). Since the 2000-2001 season, BGSU is 18-0 when it holds opponents to 60 points or less and 35-3 over the course of Dakich's six-year tenure.
FALCONS ARE LESS PREDICTABLE AT CRUNCH TIME
Last year, BGSU relied heavily on Keith McLeod to make game-winning baskets at the end of a game (8). This year, BGSU has had four players make key baskets or free throws in the final minute of a game. Sophomore John Reimold hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left at Ohio to send the game into overtime. Sophomore Cory Eyink made a layup with six seconds left to win the game at NIU. Junior Jabari Mattox hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to give BGSU a 60-59 lead at Northwestern. Junior Kevin Netter also has game-winning free throws in the final minute at Kent State and at Ohio. Netter scored all eight of the Falcons points in overtime against the Bobcats and was six of seven from the free throw line in the extra session.
FALCONS SNAP ROAD OVERTIME STREAK
With the overtime win at Ohio, the Falcons won an overtime game on the road for the first time since February 3, 2001 when they topped Miami, 67-63. Last year, the Falcons lost in OT road games at Akron and Toledo. BGSU defeated UNC-Wilmington at home and Mississippi on a neutral court in its two other extra-session contests last year.
FORTY-MINUTE CLUB
Four Falcons posted career-highs in minutes played at Ohio including Kevin Netter (44), John Reimold (43), Cory Eyink (41), and Ron Lewis (41). Eyink had played 40 minutes against Kent State, while Jabari Mattox played the entire game at Northwestern.
