BGSU Heads To Ohio, Marshall This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after completing the home portion of the Mid-American Conference schedule last weekend, will play a pair of road matches in the final weekend of league regular-season play ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (6-9-2, 4-4-2 MAC), currently eighth in the league standings, will head to Athens for a Friday (Oct. 24) match at Ohio University ... that contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at Ohio's Chessa Field.
Then, the Falcons will head to Huntington, W.Va., for a Sunday (Oct. 26) contest vs. Marshall University ... kickoff is scheduled for noon at MU's Sam Hood Field.
The Brown and Orange will conclude the regular season with a home non-conference match vs. The Ohio State University on Friday, Oct. 31 ... that match will begin at 2:30 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
MAC TOURNAMENT PICTURE
The Falcons, as mentioned, are eighth in the MAC standings heading into the final week of league regular-season play ... a total of eight teams qualify for the league tournament ... should the Falcons win both of this weekend's matches, BGSU would clinch a tourney berth ... any other outcomes could leave the Brown and Orange needing some help in the weekend's other matches ... teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie ... the tournament begins on Tuesday, Nov. 4, with the first- through fourth-place teams hosting quarterfinal matches ... the four winners move to the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals (Nov. 7) and championship (Nov. 9).
HEAD COACH Andy Richards
Andy Richards is in his fourth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 35-37-7 ... he has led BGSU to the two finest seasons in school history to date ... last season, Richards performed one of the top coaching jobs in the MAC, if not the Midwest, guiding the Brown and Orange to a 12-8-2 record and a fourth-place MAC finish ... Richards, who came to BG after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000 ... he led his first Falcon team all the way to the championship match of the MAC Tournament.
Ashlee Orr is in her fourth season with the Falcon program as well ... Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000 ... Darin Karbler is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach.
LAST TIME(S) OUT
The Falcons played three close matches last week, dropping a pair of one-goal matches before recording a tie ... on Wednesday (Oct. 15), BGSU lost a 3-2 decision at Michigan State ... sophomore Britt Anderson and junior Kristy Coppes had the Falcon goals, while senior Jenifer Kernahan made a BG season-high 12 saves in her first collegiate start ... Friday (Oct. 17), the Falcons again fell by a 3-2 score, this time in overtime to visiting Buffalo ... Anderson and sophomore Julie Trundle scored the BGSU goals ... the Brown and Orange battled league-leading Kent State to a 0-0 tie Sunday (Oct. 19), with redshirt sophomore Ali Shingler making seven saves to post her third complete-match shutout of the season.
Samantha Meister NAMED TO NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK
BGSU sophomore Samantha Meister received a pair of national honors last week, as she was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week and the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week ... Meister became only the third player in the seven-year history of the program, but the second in as many weeks, to earn national team-of-the-week accolades ... junior Kristy Coppes was selected to the SA team the week prior, while Erika Flanders was named to both teams in the opening week of the 2001 season ... both national teams of the week are comprised of 11 players from around the country, chosen on the basis of their play the previous week ... Meister earned her honors after setting a school single-match record with four goals in BGSU's 4-3 overtime win at Northern Illinois (Oct. 12).
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU returned 16 letterwinners, including a whopping 10 starters, from last year's team ... the Falcons have gone to overtime in three of the last four matches, including in each of the last three MAC contests ... sophomore Samantha Meister, who set a single-match record with four goals at Northern Illinois, leads the Falcons with 18 points ... Meister has seven goals and four assists, ranking second on the team in both categories ... junior Kristy Coppes, the team's leading scorer in each of her first two seasons at BGSU, is second on the 2003 team with 17 points, including a team-leading eight goals ... sophomore Julie Trundle is third with nine points, including a team-leading five assists, while sophomore Britt Anderson has eight points, including five in last week's three matches ... Ali Shingler has seen the bulk of the time in goal, and is 5-8-2 with a goals-against average of 2.04 ... senior Jenifer Kernahan started two matches last week, and is now 1-1-0 with a 1.42 GAA ... head coach Andy Richards has seven newcomers on the 26-player roster, including Kernahan.
THE OPPONENTS
Ohio enters the week with an overall record of 6-9-1, and the Bobcats have a MAC mark of 4-5-1 heading into Friday's match vs. BGSU ... Ohio snapped a four-match losing streak and a six-match winless streak with a pair of home victories last weekend ... the 'Cats topped Miami, 1-0 in double overtime (Oct. 17), before downing Ball State by a 4-1 count (Oct. 19) ... Ohio is 4-2-0 at home this year, including a 3-1 home mark in MAC play ... individually, senior Christel Schiering leads the team with eight goals and 19 points, while freshman Tiffany Horvath has seven goals and 17 points ... junior Kendra Hornschemeier has 11 points, including five assists, while classmate Gina Siedentopf also has five assists to tie Hornschemeier for the team lead ... in goal, sophomore Melissa Parra is 3-5-1 with a 1.51 goals-against average, while junior Michelle Meglaughlin is 3-4-0 with a 1.97 GAA ... Marshall is 2-13-1 overall heading into the week, and the Thundering Herd will bring a MAC record of 2-8-0 into a Friday (Oct. 24) home match vs. Toledo ... MU will be looking to snap a two-match losing streak, having fallen to Ball State (1-0, Oct. 17) and Miami (2-0, Oct. 19) last weekend ... the Herd is 0-5-1 at home, including an 0-4 mark in league action ... sophomore Cara Hemmerich leads the team with three goals and seven points, while senior Danielle Lowther has six points, including a team-high four assists ... Ashleigh Woods has seen the most time in goal, and is 1-9-0 with a 1.80 GAA ... sophomore Kai Nordness has a 1-3-0 record and a 2.67 GAA ... Chris Kane is in his first season as a collegiate head coach ... THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Ohio by a 5-0-1 margin in the all-time series between the teams ... last year, the Bobcats picked up a 1-0 overtime win at Cochrane Field (Oct. 6, 2002) ... the Bobcats hold a 2-0-1 lead in matches played in Athens, including a scoreless tie on Oct. 8, 1999.
BGSU holds a 3-1-1 series advantage over Marshall, including a 3-0 win last year at Cochrane (Oct. 4, 2002) ... Kristy Coppes scored the first two goals of that match, with Natalie Sampiller and Samantha Meister picking up assists ... the Falcons are 1-1-1 in matches in Huntington, with the Herd winning the last meeting there, 3-1, two years ago (Oct. 19, 2001) ... Coppes scored BGSU's lone goal in that match, off a Katie Piening feed.
A SCORELESS DRAW
Sunday's (Oct. 19) 0-0 tie vs. Kent State was the Falcons' first scoreless draw of the season, and the second in program history ... the other 0-0 deadlock came in a match at Ohio on Oct. 8, 1999.
SHINGLER'S SAVES, SHUTOUT SEND HER INTO SECOND
With her seven saves in Sunday's match vs. Kent State, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ali Shingler now has a total of 78 saves in her Falcon career ... Shingler has moved past Kit Gazley (76 saves in 1997) into second place on the BGSU career saves list ... Erika Flanders (1999-2002) holds the school record, with a total of 473 career saves ... Sunday's match also marked Shingler's third complete-match shutout, both of the season and of her career, moving her into second on that list ... Flanders had a school-record 17 shutouts in her Falcon tenure.
WORKING OVERTIME
The Falcons have gone to overtime in each of the last three matches, and in three of the last four contests overall ... BGSU has now played five OT matches this season, tying the school record ... 2003 marks the fourth time the Brown and Orange has played five overtime matches in a season (1999, 2000 and 2002) ... the Falcons are now 8-10-11 all-time in overtime, including 1-2-2 this year.
PARITY? PERHAPS
From the "There's Parity in the MAC" department ... the Falcons have played overtime matches on each of the last two Sundays ... on October 12, the Falcons went to the extra session against the team currently 13th in the league, Northern Illinois ... seven days later, BGSU played the first-place team, Kent State, to a double-OT draw.
KATCHING UP WITH KERNAHAN
Senior Jenifer Kernahan made her first career start on Wednesday (Oct. 15) at Michigan State ... she made a BGSU season-high 12 saves in the 3-2 loss ... Kernahan, the starting catcher on the Falcon softball team, is playing both sports in the 2003-04 academic year ... her total of 12 saves ties her for the sixth-highest total in school history ... the school record of 17 was set by Erika Flanders against the Spartans in the Falcons' previous visit to Old College Field (Sept. 2, 2001) ... Kernahan's first goal allowed in that match snapped her personal shutout streak at 132:04 ... Kernahan, who played the first half of Friday's (Oct. 17) Buffalo match, has a 1-1-0 record, 24 saves and a 1.42 goals-against average on the season.
MEISTER DISHES 'EM OUT
Sophomore Samantha Meister, after scoring all of BGSU's goals in the 4-3 win at Northern Illinois (Oct. 12), did not find the net in the Falcons' next match ... but, in that contest (at MSU), she had the primary assist on both of the BGSU goals ... she also had an assist in the UB match two days later, and now has a team-high 18 points on the season.
HAVE A YEAR
Sophomore Samantha Meister was injured in only her third career match, and missed seven contests early last season with a broken nose ... upon her return, she scored her first collegiate goal in her fourth match back, at Central Michigan on Oct. 11, 2002 ... in 22 matches over the next calendar year (plus one day), Meister scored a total of 13 goals ... she has been at her best in MAC play, as -- through Sunday's Kent State match -- she has scored 11 goals in her last 15 league regular-season matches ... this season, all seven of Meister's goals have come in MAC contests.
COPPES EXTENDS BGSU CAREER SCORING RECORD
Kristy Coppes scored a goal in the Falcons' match at Michigan State (Oct. 15), extending two of her own school records in the process ... Coppes, just a junior, now has totals of 32 career goals and 69 points in the Brown and Orange.
BRITT GETS ON THE BOARD
Sophomore Britt Anderson scored a total of five points in back-to-back matches last week ... Anderson scored the Falcons' first goal and assisted on the second at Michigan State ... she also scored a goal in the Buffalo match ... Anderson now has a total of eight points this season, on three goals and a pair of assists.
SOPHOMORES ALREADY ON CAREER LISTS
A trio of sophomores are moving up the BGSU career scoring lists ... Samantha Meister had 11 points in a three-match span, culminating with Friday's (Oct. 17) Buffalo match ... Meister now has a total of 35 career points, after just 32 career contests, to rank sixth in school history ... she has 13 career goals to rank fifth on that BGSU list ... Julie Trundle had a goal and an assist in the Buffalo match, and now ranks fourth at BG with a career total of 13 assists ... Trundle has seven career goals (T-ninth), and now has 27 total points as a Falcon, a total that places her ninth in school history ... another soph, Britt Anderson, now has seven career goals to move into that ninth-place tie on the school list ... Anderson has a total of 17 points as a Falcon, moving her into the top 15.
SOME SERIES STUFF
The BGSU-Buffalo series has featured more than its share of close contests ... Friday marked the fifth consecutive overtime match between the Falcons and Bulls ... BGSU won a pair of 2-1, extra-session matches vs. UB last year, including a road win in the regular season (Oct. 20, 2002) and a double-OT win at Cochrane Field in the MAC Tournament (Nov. 6, 2002) ... BGSU now leads the series, 4-3-1, and the teams are tied, 3-3-0, in matches played at BG ... the Falcons now lead Kent State by a 4-2-2 margin in that series ... and, BGSU is now 2-1-2 in home contests vs. the Flashes ... the Brown and Orange posted a shutout vs. KSU for the second consecutive season, as the Falcons won, 1-0, in last year's meeting at Kent.
