BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will open a large portion of their home schedule, playing five matches in the next eight days, four of them Mid-American Conference games, before hitting the road to face four straight MAC opponents to close out the month of October. BGSU will host Central Michigan and Kent State this weekend (Oct. 10-11). Both matches are set for 7:00 p.m.
The Falcons went 1-1 over the past week, traveling to Toledo last Wednesday, earning their first MAC win of the season, with a five-set win at Savage Hall. The junior tandem of Melissa Mohr and Taylor Twite registered 34 kills combined in the win. They also dropped a five-set match to Buffalo last Sunday.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
The Central Michigan Chippewas (6-10, 0-3) enter the match with the Falcons, coming off three straight losses to MAC opponents, Akron, Kent State and Toledo. BGSU holds a slight 19-17 series lead against the Chippewas. Last season the two teams split the series, with each team winning on the opposition's home court. BGSU defeated CMU in three at Central Michigan, only to have the Chippewas come away with a win at Anderson Arena in the final match of the season last year.
The Chips are led by a balanced offensive attack, with five players averaging at least 2.28 kills per game. Emily Lovejoy is their top attacker, averaging 3.35 kills per game. On the defensive side of the ball, as a team they average 2.40 blocks and 14.13 digs per game. Meghan Moore leads the team in blocks with 1.21 blocks per game, while Ali McCrite has a team-leading 4.11 digs per game.
The Kent State Flashes (6-6, 2-1) are coming off back-to-back wins over Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. BGSU holds a 36-13 series lead over the Flashes, and are 20-4 at home when facing Kent State. Last season KSU defeated the Brown & Orange in four, 22-30, 24-30, 32-30, 26-30.
The Flashes are led by Danielle Holt and her 4.65 kills per game. On the defensive side of the ball Tarrin Pelton has a team-leading 3.90 digs per game, while Holt is second on the team with 3.33 digs per game. The Flashes average 1.42 blocks per game and are led by Kara Warnke and her .68 blocks per game.
OTHER FALCON NOTES
NORRIS READY TO CLAIM RECORD
Heading into the match versus Central Michigan senior Susie Norris has 1,342 career digs, two shy of the school record 1,344, held by Holli Costein from 1989-1992. Norris also became the 12th Falcon in school history to surpass the 1,000-kill plateau, (versus UMBC back on September 6) as well as one of only seven Falcons to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
FALCONS CONTINUE TO GO DISTANCE
Bowling Green has played in 16 matches this season, and nearly half (7) have gone the distance. The Falcons are 5-2 in those contests. This past weekend was no exception as BGSU went five games in both matches against Toledo and Buffalo this past week.
