Bowling Green Set for Rematch from 1984 National Championship
For the first time since the 1984 National Championship game in Lake Placid, N.Y., BGSU will face-off against Minnesota-Duluth this weekend, Jan. 2-3, 2004. The games will be played at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (5,333) and are scheduled for 8:05 p.m. (CST).
BGSU vs. Minnesota-Duluth
The two teams will be going head-to-head for the first time in 20 years, when the Falcons captured its only national championship with a 5-4 quadruple overtime victory over the Bulldogs in Lake Placid, N.Y. (March 24, 1984). The two teams met just once before 1984, with UMD registering a 7-4 victory on Jan. 4, 1981, at the Colonial Bank Invitational (Hartford, Conn.).
Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs
UMD is 9-8-2 overall and 7-5-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Bulldogs are led by senior forward Junior Lessard with 14 goals and 12 assists. Lessard's 14 goals are second-best in the nation. Evan Schwabe has a team-high 17 assists while the team has two young goalies in freshman Josh Johnson (.904 save pct., 2.71 gaa.) and sophomore Isaac Reichmuth (.893 save pct., 3.24 gaa.). Head Coach Scott Sandelin is in his fourth season with the Bulldogs (51-75-14).
Road Less Travelled
The Jan. 2-3 series at Minnesota-Duluth will kick off a busy beginning to the second-half of the season for BGSU. The Falcons travel to Duluth, Minn. (Jan. 2-3), Fairbanks, Alaska (Jan. 23-24), and Omaha, Neb. (Feb. 6-7) over a 36-day period. The total land distance from Bowling Green to those destinations is 5,216 miles. While the team will fly to all three locations, hockey equipment manager Scott "Scooter" Jess will drive the equipment to Duluth and Omaha.
Land of a 1,000 Lakes Revisited
BGSU's trip to Duluth, Minn., marks the second-straight year the Falcons have travelled to the Land of a 1,000 Lakes. Last season, BGSU participated in the Dodge Holiday Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota. Falcon assistant captain Alex Rogosheske is the lone Minnesota native on the squad, hailing from Mahtomedi, Minn.
