Fresno, Calif. - Bowling Green right-hander Kyle Knoblauch pitched one of his finer outings as a Falcon on Monday afternoon, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision to Gonzaga in the first game of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic, hosted by Fresno State University.
Knoblauch (0-1) gave up one unearned run in the first inning and was spectacular for the rest of the game. The Blissfield, Mich., native did not allow a runner past first base for the rest of the game and retired the side in order in four of the remaining seven innings (fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth innings). Knoblauch scattered four singles in eight innings of work, walking just one Gonzaga batter while striking out six.
Meanwhile, the Falcon offense had two runners thrown out at home plate in the top of the ninth inning that could have tied the game. After Jeff Warnock led off the ninth with a strikeout, Nate Henschen singled to right field and was pinch-ran for by Jayson Selgo. Kevin Longstreth reached on a shortstop error and Selgo advanced all the way to third base with just one out. Jimmy Lipari then hit a ball back to the pitcher, who threw home to retire Selgo for the second out of the inning. Then, Dash Yost singled to right-fielder Jeff Culpepper, who came up throwing and caught Longstreth at home plate for the final out of the game.
In the eighth inning, BGSU had its first opportunity to tie the game after Gonzaga pitcher Ed Clelland intentionally walked Falcon Kelly Hunt to load the bases with two outs. Freshman Nolan Reimold, though, struck out swinging to end the threat.
BGSU had five hits in the game while striking out 10 times. Clelland (1-0) picked up the complete-game victory for Gonzaga.
BGSU drops to 1-3 overall while Gonzaga improved to 5-9. The Falcons play Cal Poly tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1 p.m. (EST) at Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.
