Falcons Get First Win Convincingly Over Penn, 23-7

Fresno, Calif. - Bowling Green registered its first win of the 2003 season, convincingly, over Penn on Saturday afternoon, 23-7. The Falcons used a 15-run sixth inning to seal the victory and improve its record to 1-2. The game was played in Fresno, Calif., at Bullard High School and was not part of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic.
The Falcons held a 7-0 lead entering the top of the sixth inning when the offensive explosion happened. In the top-half of the frame, BGSU had 15 runs, 14 hits, two triples, and 12 singles. Both junior David Barkholz and senior Kelly Hunt hit a bases-loaded triples in the inning to plate six of the 15 runs.
Barkholz was a single away from hitting for the cycle in the game. He smacked a first-inning homer, fifth-inning double, and a sixth-inning triple in five at-bats, with one walk. The center fielder ended with a career-high seven RBIs, one off the school record, and scored four runs. Hunt ended 3-for-6 with four RBI.
Twelve different Falcons collected hits in the game. Besides Barkholz and Hunt, players with multiple hits were Spencer Schmitz (3-for-4, three RBI), Jeff Warnock (3-for-5, two RBI), John Reimold (2-for-3, one RBI), Jay Selgo (2-for-3, one RBI), Tyler Wasserman (2-for-2), Steve Raszka (2-for-2, two RBI), and Bobby Majer (2-for-2).
BGSU ended with 25 hits compared to Penn's six. The Falcons used nine different pitchers in the game with Tyler Saneholtz (1-0) picking up the win after pitching a scoreless fifth inning. Lefty Doug Flere struckout the side in the fourth inning, and freshman Tyler Johnson and sophomore Matt Hundley each had two strikeouts.
BGSU (1-2) now prepares for six-straight days of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic, hosted by Fresno State University. The Falcons play Gonzaga on Monday, March 10, at 4 p.m. (EST). Junior right-hander Kyle Knoblauch (0-0) will start on the mound for the Falcons.
