Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green's Kelly Hunt drove in eight runs, including a school-record seven in the fifth inning, in a 17-8 Falcon victory over visiting IPFW on Tuesday afternoon at Warren Steller Field. Hunt smacked a grand slam and a three-run home run in the fifth inning alone to help BGSU plate 12 runs in the fifth frame.
Hunt's seven RBIs in one inning is a new school record and the eight RBIs for the game tied a school record held by Nick Elrod (May 1, 2001 vs. Xavier), Len Elias (April 8, 2001 vs. Buffalo) and Andy Tracy (May 10, 1995 vs. Wright State).
The 6-foot-5 first baseman got the Falcons on the board first with a sacrifice fly to center field in the first inning, scoring David Barkholz.
IPFW plated two runs in the top of the third inning for a 2-1 lead. BGSU regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, 3-2, before putting the game away in the fifth inning.
BGSU sent 16 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, collecting 12 runs on 10 hits. The first three batters of the inning reached before Hunt came to the plate and drove a 3-2 pitch off of left-handed pitcher Eric Lambert over the left-field wall for his first grand slam of the season. After a pitching change by the Mastodons, Kevin Longstreth pinch-hit for Nate Henschen and hit a solo home run to right field, giving BGSU back-to-back home runs and a 8-2 lead. Barkholz added a RBI-single and Steve Raszka had a bases-clearing double for a 12-2 lead. Nolan Reimold followed with a single to right field, advancing Raszka to third base, which brought up Hunt for his three-run blast to center field for his second home run and seventh RBI of the inning.
IPFW plated four unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 15-6 before the Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Raszka scored on a wild pitch and Hunt scored off of a Bobby Majer double.
BGSU had 17 hits come from nine different players. Reimold had three RBI while Barkholz and Hunt each scored three times. IPFW finished with 10 hits. Each team stranded just five runners while IPFW committed one error and BGSU had two miscues.
The Falcons improve to 10-13 overall and 6-2 at Warren Steller Field. BGSU returns to action on Wednesday, April 16, when it hosts Wright State at 3 p.m. The Falcons will travel to Northern Illinois for a four-game league series this weekend (April 18-20).
