Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green dropped its weekend series with Marshall (one win, three losses) with a 12-5 loss on Sunday at Warren Steller Field to the Thundering Herd. Marshall pounded out 17 hits and five home runs in the victory.
Sophomore right-hander Tom Oestrike was cruising in the first three innings of the scoreless game, striking out five and allowing just two hits and no runs. Marshall designated hitter Matt LaFleur changed that quickly in the fourth inning when he led off with a home run to left field for a 1-0 lead. First baseman Craig Dziedziejko followed with another solo blast to left field for a 2-0 Herd lead.
The Falcons cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a throwing error by MU pitcher Steve Ziroli, which scored Kelly Hunt all the way from second base. Marshall answered, though, with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, including three runs off of a Corie O'Bryan home run with two runners on base, to take a 6-1 lead.
Oestrike was relieved by sophomore Burke Badenhop with two outs in the fifth inning. Oestrike dropped to 1-2 on the season and finished with six strikeouts, two walks and six runs allowed in four and two-third innings.
Marshall added two in the top of the sixth inning and one in the top of the seventh inning. Jeff Warnock singled home Jimmy Lipari in the seventh inning to give BGSU its second run of the game.
After two runs in the top of the ninth by Marshall, junior Nate Henschen homered to left field with Warnock and Spencer Schmitz on base, making the score 12-5. Nolan Reimold popped up to the shortstop in the next at-bat to end the game, however.
BGSU dropped to 13-19 overall and 6-10 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons travel to Ohio State University on Wednesday, April 30, for a 6:35 p.m. contest. It will mark the first time BGSU has played at Bill Davis Stadium since appearing in the NCAA Regional in 1999.
