Two More BGSU Student-Athletes Named Academic All-District

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University student-athletes D'Arcy McConvey and Shelley Binzel were named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV At-Large Third Team last week. McConvey (Richmond Hill, Ontario) will be a senior member of the 2003-04 Falcon hockey team while Binzel (Dublin, Ohio) completed her four-year career with the women's golf team this past spring.
The team is the result of voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members within District IV. The district consists of schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Additionally, he/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
The at-large team hopefuls consisted of district student-athletes in the women's sports of crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. On the men's side, the sports covered were tennis, golf, swimming, wrestling, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo, fencing, and lacrosse.
Binzel was recently named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team for her senior year thanks to her 3.75 GPA while majoring in marketing. She finished with a new school-record season average of 78.35 through 23 rounds in 2002-03, and finished her career with a 80.03 average in 91 rounds, also a new school record. It marked the third year that Binzel had been recognized for her academic success by the league offices. Binzel is also a two-time National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar. She was named to the All-MAC Second Team for the third time in her career after finishing tied for 15th at the 2003 MAC Championships.
McConvey was named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) All-Academic First Team this past season after posting a 3.91 GPA in financial economics. He served as the team captain last season while leading the team in points with 28. He finished with six goals and 22 assists. In 2002, he was was a Second-Team Academic All-District IV member and was named CCHA All-Academic Honorable Mention. McConvey was recently selected to be BGSU's representative at the NCAA Leadership Conference (May 25-29) in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
BGSU women's tennis player Alyson Gabel was named Verizon Academic All-District At-Large First Team last week.
