HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The host University of Hawai'i scored a pair of goals in each half to down the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 4-0, Sunday night (Aug. 31). The match was the final contest of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts No Ka Oi at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Rainbow Wahine improved to 1-1-0 on the young season, while the Falcons dropped to 0-2-0.
UH sophomore Natasha Kai, the preseason player of the year in the Western Athletic Conference, had two goals in the win, while Arlene Devit and Krisha Kai scored a goal apiece.
Robyn deHay had assists on the first three goals of the match to tie the school record for UH, picked to finish second in the WAC in the preseason coaches poll.
deHay had an assist on the opening goal of the contest, feeding the ball to Tia Medeiros, who then touched the ball to Devitt with a heel pass. Devitt put the ball past BGSU redshirt sophomore Ali Shingler at the 29:19 mark to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Natasha Kai, who had come up empty on two previous breakaways, then connected for a goal with just 1:44 left in the first half, and she scored again at 68:59, with deHay assisting on both goals.
Krisha Kai, Natasha's younger sister, closed the scoring at 76:32.
The Rainbow Wahine held a 19-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 edge in shots on goal. Shingler made seven saves in her complete-match effort for the Falcons. Mahie Atay made four saves in 82:03 in the net for the hosts, while Erin Chow played the final 7:57 and did not make a save.
Natasha Kai had nine of UH's 19 total shots, including six of the team's 12 shots on goal.
The Falcons now return to the mainland to begin a four-match homestand. BGSU will face Eastern Illinois University in a Friday (Sept. 5) contest at Cochrane Field, beginning at 2:00 p.m., before opening Mid-American Conference play with a Sunday (Sept. 7) match set for a noontime start.
NOTES
QUOTING BGSU COACH Andy Richards
"This was a very disappointing result, particularly after we had played so well against an excellent team yesterday. It was very difficult for the team to turn around within 24 hours and put together back-to-back performances of the quality we needed."
"We have had a little bit of a problem putting into games some of the things we have practiced, which is why we are disappointed. Common sense says we'll have to take this weekend as a learning experience, particularly as we played a team a step or two above us (Arizona State) and another team that will be a strength in the WAC (Hawai'i) on their home field. As with any learning process, it takes time, and we'll have to see whether we have learned our lessons when we get back on the field next week."
"We're a little disappointed, but determined to put things right, and we're looking forward to our next game."
"On the bright side, Ali Shingler had a tremendous weekend. We're extremely happy with her. Our goalkeeping situation for this season is a little bit of an unknown, and we feel very positive about the performance Ali put together. It's been a huge plus for her and for the team."
"Also, we're proud of both Kasey (Freeman) and Britt (Anderson) being selected to the all-tournament team. We look forward to getting back on the practice field next week and getting ready for Eastern Illinois and Eastern Michigan.
