Volleyball To Host BGSU Invitational This Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball squad opens up its home portion of the 2003 season by hosting the BGSU Invitational this weekend (Sept 12-13). Joining the Falcons for the round-robin tournament will be Iowa State, Murray State and West Virginia.
For the first time in three years and only the second time in over a decade, the Falcons will host an in-season tournament. Bowling Green won the most recent BGSU Invite, in 2000. Prior to that tourney, BGSU had last hosted a tourney in 1992.
The Falcons are coming off its second consecutive tournament victory after posting a 2-1 record at the Mark Twain Invitational. The Brown & Orange defeated Bradley and Eastern Illinois, but dropped a four-set match to UMBC. Seniors Susie Norris and Nadia Bedricky were named to the all-tournament team.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
Murray State (0-3) dropped its first three matches of the 2003 season to Michigan, #16 Louisville and #29 Texas A&M at the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge over the weekend. The Racers are led by sophomore Abbi Gui who was named Ohio Valley Conference player of the week averaging 3.58 kills per game with a .309 attack percentage. Gui also averaged 0.92 blocks per game last weekend.
Iowa State (5-2) dropped a four-set match to #6 Northern Iowa on Tuesday night. Prior to the loss to the Panthers, the Cyclones captured victories over Western Illinois and Iowa while dropping a three-set match to Kentucky at the Cyclone Challenge. The Cyclones are led by Renae Pruess, who posted double digit kills in all three matches at the Cyclone Challenge (34 total) to go along with 23 digs.
West Virginia (1-5) comes into the tournament having lost their last five matches, most recently dropping matches to Wright State and Towson at home. On offense the Mountaineers are led by Stephanie Zolna (3.78 kills per game) and Alison Zemanski (2.75 kills per game). Zolna is also the top defender with 4.00 digs a game.
