Falcons Play Three Times This Week

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, coming off an impressive victory, will play a total of three matches this week ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards (1-4-1, 0-1-1 Mid-American Conference) will visit the University of Detroit Mercy in a Wednesday (Sept. 17) match, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at UDM's Titan Field.
Then, the Brown and Orange will return home, and return to MAC play, with a Friday (Sept. 12) match vs. the University of Akron ... that match will begin at 4:00 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field ... the Falcons will remain at home for a non-league matchup with Wright State University on Sunday (Sept. 21) at 3:00 p.m.
This week's action ends a seven-match stretch which sees the team play six times at Cochrane Field ... Wednesday's Detroit match is the only road contest during that three-week stretch.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his fourth season as a collegiate head coach, all with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 30-32-6 ... he has led BGSU to the two finest seasons in school history to date ... last season, Richards performed one of the top coaching jobs in the MAC, if not the Midwest, guiding the Brown and Orange to a 12-8-2 record and a fourth-place MAC finish ... Richards, who came to BG after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her fourth season with the Falcon program as well ... Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000 ... Darin Karbler is in his second season as a volunteer assistant coach.
LAST TIME OUT
The Falcons posted a win and a tie at Cochrane Field last weekend ... the Brown and Orange battled Central Michigan to a 2-2 tie in double-overtime Friday (Sept. 12) ... senior Carrie Richards had a goal and an assist, while sophomore Samantha Meister scored the team's other goal ... redshirt sophomore Ali Shingler made six saves ... on Sunday (Sept. 14), the Falcons got a goal from junior Kristy Coppes early in the second half, and made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Cincinnati ... Shingler made two saves in earning her first career shutout.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU returned 16 letterwinners, including a whopping 10 starters, from last year's team ... junior Kristy Coppes, the team's leading scorer in each of her first two seasons at BGSU, is tied with senior co-captain Carrie Richards for the team scoring lead ... both Coppes and Richards have two goals and five points ... junior Nikki Pucillo leads the Brown and Orange with two assists ... THE OPPONENTS
Detroit has an overall record of 2-1 on the young season ... the Titans will have been idle for over a week when BGSU heads to the Motor City on Wednesday ... UDM last played on Tuesday (Sept. 9), downing Niagara, 2-0 ... the Titans beat Western Michigan, 2-1, to open the season, before losing, 4-0, at Michigan State ... freshman Mary Parker leads the team with two goals and four points, while junior Megan Husek has three points ... junior GK Allison Dube has played all 270 minutes to date, and has a goals-against average of 1.67 ... the Titans returned eight letterwinners, all starters, from last year's team that went 7-8-5 overall and 2-2-2 in Horizon League play ... head coach Mike Lupenec has a record of 99-88-9 in his 10th season, all with the Titans ... the school's athletics web site is www.detroittitans.com.
Akron enters the week with a 2-3-1 record, and the Zips will bring a 1-1-0 MAC ledger to Cochrane Field Friday ... UA split a pair of 1-0 matches last weekend, losing to Ohio (Sept. 12) and winning at Marshall (Sept. 14) ... the team's other win came in the season opener, vs. IPFW ... Akron has lost to Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine and tied Duquesne ... junior Jeannie Stuckey has scored three of UA's four goals and six of the team's nine points this fall ... classmate Crystal Tabor has played every minute in goal, and has a GAA of just 0.96 ... last year, the Zips went 5-11-1 in the team's second year as a varsity program, and UA went 1-10-1 in the MAC ... head coach Catherine Byrne welcomed back 12 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from that team ... Wright State has a 2-4-0 record entering the week ... the Raiders will play a Friday night (Sept. 19) match at Marshall before coming to BGSU for Sunday's contest ... last weekend, WSU dropped a pair of one-goal home matches, to Miami (1-2) and Louisville (0-1) ... the team's wins have come against Morehead State and Elon ... last year, WSU went 6-10-4 overall and posted a Horizon League record of 1-2-3 ... head coach Scott Rodgers returned 19 letterwinners, including eight starters, from that team ... THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Detroit by a 3-1 margin in the all-time series between the teams ... BGSU won the most recent meeting, however, a 5-2 decision at Cochrane Field last fall (Sept. 4, 2002) ... in that match, Kristy Coppes came off the bench to score a hat trick in a school-record span of just 5:56 ... Leah Eggleton also scored a goal in that match ... UDM scored six goals in each of the other three meetings, including both matches at Titan Field ... the Titans won a 6-4 match five years ago (Oct. 27, 1998) and a 6-3 contest two years later (Sept. 6, 2000).
The Falcons hold a 2-0 advantage in the series with Akron ... last year, the Brown and Orange recorded a 2-1 win in the Rubber City (Sept. 27, 2002) ... Julie Trundle scored BGSU's first goal in that win ... the Falcons won the lone prior meeting at Cochrane Field, 3-0, two years ago (Oct. 5, 2001), with Kristy Coppes scoring twice and Katie Piening picking up a goal and two assists.
BGSU also leads Wright State by a 2-0 margin in that series ... last year, Keeley Dayton, Kristy Coppes and Samantha Meister scored goals in a 3-1 Falcon road win (Nov. 1, 2002) ... the Brown and Orange posted a 2-1 win at Cochrane Field on Oct. 9, 2001.
RICHARDS FINDS THE SCORESHEET
Senior co-captain Carrie Richards posted the first three-point match of her career Friday (Sept. 12), scoring BGSU's first goal and assisting on the second in a 2-2 tie vs. Central Michigan ... Richards had entered the Sept. 5 Eastern Illinois match with career totals of one goal and six points in her first 26 matches as a Falcon ... over the next three contests, she had five points on two goals and an assist.
SHINGLER SHUTS DOWN THE BEARCATS
Redshirt sophomore Ali Shingler blanked Cincinnati as the Falcons posted a 1-0 victory Sunday (Sept. 14) ... the match marked the first win, and the first shutout, of Shingler's career ... the Grove City, Ohio, native has started each of the season's first six matches in goal, and has played 549:35 of a possible 560 minutes ... she has made a total of 34 saves to date ... Shingler played a total of 87:27 over four matches as a freshman in 2001, and did not see match action last fall ... her longest stint prior to the 2003 season was 45 minutes (vs. Youngstown State in 2001), and she had made three career saves entering this season's opener vs. Arizona State.
COPPES ON CAREER CHARTS
Junior Kristy Coppes scored the lone goal of the match as the Falcons downed Cincinnati ... the goal was the 26th of her career, extending her own school record ... Coppes now has a career total of 57 points, good for second in BGSU history ... she now now trails school record-holder Jill Conover (65 points from 1999-2002) by just eight points.
FALCON SEASON FIRSTS
Four Falcons -- juniors Nikki Pucillo and Beth Rieman and sophomores Leah Eggleton and Samantha Meister -- each scored their first points of the young season in the Central Michigan contest ... Meister scored the Falcons' second goal of the match, with Pucillo picking up the primary assist ... Eggleton and Rieman each had assisted on the first goal of the match.
PUCILLO WITH THE ASSIST...
Junior Nikki Pucillo extended her assist streak to two matches by drawing the lone helper on the Kristy Coppes goal vs. Cincinnati ... Pucillo now has nine career assists, tying her for fifth place on that BGSU list.
WORKING OVERTIME
Following Friday's tie with Central Michigan, the Falcons now have an all-time record of 7-8-10 in overtime matches ... BGSU is now 3-5-3 in OT contests at Cochrane Field ... the Falcons are 3-3-8 in all regular-season OT matches vs. MAC opposition.
TOUGH CROWD
In the Cincinnati match, BGSU was facing a 2002 NCAA Tournament team for the third time in this season's six matches ... the Bearcats went 17-4-3 and advanced to the second round of the national tourney a year ago ... previous BG opponents Arizona State and Eastern Illinois also qualified for the NCAA tourney last year ... UC entered last week ranked 10th in the Great Lakes Region in the soccerbuzz.com poll.
WHEN DID THEY JOIN THE MAC?
Sunday's match marked the fourth time Cincinnati has faced a MAC team in six matches this season ... BGSU is the first MAC team to defeat the Bearcats in regulation time in 2003, as well as the first league team to record a shutout vs. UC ... the 'Cats went to overtime in a win over Toledo, a loss to Central Michigan and a tie vs. Miami.
SPREADING AROUND THE STARTS
Junior Katie Piening made her first start of the season in the UC match ... Piening becomes the 17th different Falcon to have started at least one match this year to date.
