Falcons Sweep Season Series With Rockets And Huskies
Back on Sept. 24-25 the BGSU volleyball team captured their first two MAC wins of the 2004 season with four game sweeps of both Toledo and Northern Illinois. Two weeks later the same occurred. This past weekend, this time on the road, the volleyball team once again downed both the Rockets and Huskies in four games.
Over the weekend Taylor Twite recorded 19 kills vs. Toledo and 22 kills in the win over NIU. In the two wins she averaged 5.12 kills and a .465 hitting percentage. Freshman Maggie Karges registered 28 kills and 23 digs over the weekend, while senior Melissa Mohr posted back-to-back double-figure kills with 12 vs. UT and 10 vs. NIU.
A Look At The Opponents
Central Michigan (4-13, 1-6) is coming off two three game sweeps over the weekend at the hands of Ball State and Ohio. The Chips are led by Emily Lovejoy and her 4.38 kills and 2.67 digs per game. The series with CMU is tied at 19-19, including two wins by the Chips last season.
Ohio (13-2, 5-0) enters this weekend at the top of the East Division after sweeping both Kent State and Central Michigan the past weekend. The Bobcats are led by Julia Winkfield's 3.81 kills per game on offense. Defensively Michaele Blackburn leads OU with 4.67 digs per game.
Twite Earns MAC POW
Taylor Twite is this week's MAC West Division Player of the Week after guiding the Falcons to a pair of league wins and a 2-1 mark on the week. The award is the first of Twite's career.
In two conference contests, the senior middle hitter averaged 5.12 kills, 5.69 points, 1.12 blocks and 0.62 digs per game while hitting .465. Twite matched her career high with 22 kills and hit .528 against Northern Illinois, after dropping in 19 kills versus Toledo. Overall on the week, Twite averaged 4.58 kills, 5.08 points, 0.92 blocks and 0.50 digs per game.
The Lapeer, Michigan native joins fellow teammates Emily Manser and Melissa Mohr as Falcons to receive the award this season.
Offense All Across The Net
One of the reasons for the dramatic turnaround this season has been the ability to count on many different players throughout the season. The Brown and Orange have nearly seven players averaging 2+ kills per game. At the top is Taylor Twite and her 3.60 kills per game. She is trailed by Melissa Mohr (2.85), Maggie Karges (2.71), Stephanie Swiger (2.27), Corrie Mills (2.24), Ashlei Nofzinger (2.00) and Emily Manser (1.97).
Six different Falcons have led the team in kills this season. Twite has led the team seven times. Swiger and Mohr three different times this season. Karges and Mills twice. Manser also led the team once.
Karges Filling In
At the end on the 2003 season the Falcons waved goodbye to several outside hitters that were going to be hard pressed to replace. Or that's what was thought.
Before September 11, the freshman had only 15 kills and 42 digs in six matches. Since then, the 5-10 outside hitter, has recorded 153 kills, including 19 kills versus Wright State and Miami. She has also posted 152 digs, which includes a 22-dig effort versus Robert Morris and Wright State.
In MAC games only, Karges ranks as the third highest freshman with 3.54 kills/game.
Milestone For Mareski
Senior setter Amber Mareski recorded her 2,700th career assist over the past weekend. For her career she now owns 2,755 assists in BGSU career, which ranks fifth all-time in school history.
1. 4,406 Linda Popovich 1986-89 2. 3,779 Carey Amos 1989-92 3. 3,407 Jodi Olson 1993-95 4. 2,766 Natalie Becker 1998-2001 5. 2,755 Amber Mareski 2001-SA
Home Sweet Home
Anderson Arena has been very kind to the BGSU volleyball team this year. The Falcons are 3-0 this year at home with wins over Cleveland State, Toledo and Northern Illinois.
Falcons In The MAC
With 12.65 assists per game, Amber Mareski ranks third in the MAC. She has 822 assists on the season.
Melissa Mohr ranks fifth in the MAC in blocks per game with 1.24. She has 12 solo blocks and 70 block-assists on the season. Mohr also ranks fifth in the MAC with .41 aces/ game.
Taylor Twite ranks 11th in kills per game with 3.60 and seventh in hitting percentage with a .323.
BGSU as a team ranks third in the conference with a .230 hitting percentage, fourth in assists (14.33), fourth in service aces (1.79) and fourth in digs (17.74).
Serves Up
When looking at deciding factors in wins and loses, most will notice a difference in kills and digs, but this year the service game has been the most telling stat for the volleyball program. Heading into this week, the Falcons are 9-1 when out serving the opponent, compared to a 2-6 disadvantage in games they do not.
On the year BGSU has 118 aces compared to only 86 for their opponents. Melissa Mohr (27), Emily Manser (20) and Maggie Karges (19) lead the team in aces.
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Denise Van De Walle and the USA National Sitting Volleyball team came away with the bronze medal two weekends with a four game victory over Slovenia (25-20, 10-25, 25-18, 25-20) on the final day of competition at the 2004 Paralympic Games, but their adventure does not stop there. On Monday, October 18, Team USA will visit with President Bush and be congratulated for their great accomplishment
