KENT, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team suffered a 4-2 loss at Kent State University Friday afternoon (Sept. 15) at the Kent State Soccer Field.
With the win, the Golden Flashes improve to 9-2-4 overall and 5-2-2 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Falcons fall to 4-10-1 and 2-5-1, respectively.
On a rainy day, the teams battled through 40 minutes of scoreless play, before Lisa Kurz got the Flashes on the board. Kurz drilled a free kick just past the outstretched fingertips of Falcon goalkeeper Ali Shingler.
The Flashes took that 1-0 lead into the half, but the Brown and Orange knotted the score early in the second stanza. A pass by junior Leah Eggleton sent senior Kristy Coppes in, and Coppes took a bouncing ball, made a move on KSU 'keeper Alicia Fernandez and deposited the ball in the net. Eggleton drew the lone assist on Coppes' school record-tying 12th goal of the year, which came less than three minutes into the second half.
But, just five minutes later, the hosts retook the lead. KSU's Kimberly Dimitroff took a feed from Amy Kessler on a break and played a left-footed shot into the side netting for her 11th of the year. Then, the Flashes' Amanda Messer made it 3-1 in the 75th minute, collecting a loose ball in the box after a scramble and chipping the ball into the net.
BGSU cut the lead to a single goal, however, when Coppes fired a shot that Fernandez saved, but couldn't corral. Junior Britt Anderson pounced on the rebound and fired the ball into the net from close range. With 6:43 left in the second half, the Falcons were within 3-2.
But, Dimitroff clinched the win for the Flashes with her second goal of the day and 12th of the season. After a ball got past the Falcon defense on the slick field, Dimitroff was in all alone on a breakaway, and scored on a shot from just inside the top of the box.
The Falcons suffered the setback despite holding the advantages in both shots attempted (18-14) and shots on goal (12-10). Shingler made five saves in net for the Brown and Orange, while Fernandez made a total of 10 stops for the home team.
BGSU looks to bounce back with a Sunday (Oct. 17) match at the University at Buffalo. UB picked up a 5-2 win over Toledo Friday night.
NOTES
QUOTING BGSU COACH Andy Richards
"For about the 13th or 14th game this season, Bowling Green dominated the play. But, unfortunately, once again today, we have come up short in the statistic which is most important, and that is goals scored. In today's game, we had more shots, more shots on goal, more corner kicks, we even had more assists than Kent State, but we lost."
"We had a tremendous amount of pressure, particularly in the first half. We had great possession, great work ethic and tremendous spirit. Everything was positive. But, we have struggled one more time in transferring the things we are working on from the practice field to the game field."
"We fell in some key areas today, particularly on defense, and did not execute in the manner in which we had prepared. We had asked the team to do some very specific things today, and they were not executed. And, that is why we lost the game."
"We are not finished; we have still got an opportunity to go to postseason play. But, we have a lot of work to do. We have to make sure we win games. It does us no good to beat teams in statistical categories (other than goals). We have just got to win games."
