MOUNT PLEASANT, Michigan - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team got back to their winning ways with a three game sweep over the Chippewas of Central Michigan (30-23, 30-26, 30-21) Friday night in Mount Pleasant. With the second consecutive three game sweep over the Chippewas the Falcons improved to 13-8 and 6-3 in MAC play.
Game one was a back and forth beginning with a 13-13 tie. Three kills by Taylor Twite and a kill by senior Melissa Mohr opened up a four point lead at 17-13. The Falcons stretched the lead to six at 24-18, and walked home with a 30-23 game one victory.
"I felt good about the win tonight, said head coach Denise Van De Walle. "As a team we had a tremendous defensive effort. We put a lot of pressure on Central Michigan on offense and defense all night."
The run continued to begin game two as Twite opened with three straight kills to give the Falcons an early 7-4 advantage. CMU put an end to the Falcon run, pulling even at 18-18 behind several CMU kills. The BGSU offense got back on track with kills by Twite, Mohr and freshman Maggie Karges to gain a 25-21 advantage. CMU could get no closer as a Twite kill followed by a Central Michigan setting error finished game two, 30-26.
BGSU came out of the locker room on fire, looking to end the match in three opening with a 4-0 spurt, but the Chippewas were not going to go down that easily. CMU stormed back with an 11-5 run to take a two point advantage at 11-9 before an 11-6 run by the Falcons gave BGSU the lead to stay at 20-17, forcing a CMU timeout. Bowling Green used a 10-4 run to close out the final game, 30-21 behind a .395 hitting percentage as a team.
For the match Twite led the Falcon offensive with 18 kills and a .382 hitting percentage. Melissa Mohr (9) and Maggie Karges (8) also joined the kill parade.
"Taylor [Twite] and Mel [Mohr] were hard to stop all night," said Van De Walle. "They played tremendous."
Junior transfer Ashlei Nofzinger led the Falcons with a career-high 11 digs. Emily Manser (10), Madeline Means (9) and Chrissy Gothke (9) also chipped in. "Madeline Means played great in the back row with key defensive plays," explained Van De Walle. "[Elizabeth] Simon also served the ball very well, and even ended the match with an ace."
"[Ashlei] Nofzinger came in off the bench and led us in digs (12) in just two games."
The Falcons have little time to celebrate their victory as they head to Western Michigan tomorrow night for a 7:00 p.m. showndown with the Broncos.
