Falcons Travel West to Omaha
BGSU plays a two-game CCHA series at Nebraska-Omaha this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 12-13) in the Qwest Center. Both games are scheduled for 8:05 EST face-offs. NOTE: A scheduling note for radio listeners, play-by-play action of Friday night's contest will be heard on WPFX (107.7 FM) while Saturday's game will be heard on WBGU (88.1 FM) as normal. Andy Evans will be calling both games.
Falcons Ranked Highest In Seven Years
BGSU is ranked 19th this week in the USCHO.com/CSTV Division I Poll with nine votes. The Falcons are ranked behind Michigan State (16 votes) and ahead of Nebraska-Omaha (six votes). There are 58 hockey teams in NCAA Division I. The USCHO.com/CSTV Poll is compiled by U.S. College Hockey Online, and consists of 40 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 12 beat writers from across the country. The poll is published weekly by the Associated Press. The last time BGSU was ranked this high was on Oct. 6, 1997, when with three votes the Falcons were 17th in the nation.
BGSU vs. Nebraska-Omaha
UNO leads the series 8-5-2, but the series is tied over the past six matchups, 2-2-2. JR Mike Falk has four goals and one assist in just four games against the Mavericks while SR Jordan Sigalet has posted a shutout against UNO and has a 2.21 gaa. and .930 save pct. in four games. BGSU tied (3-3) and won (3-1) in Omaha last season. This weekend's games will be the fifth and sixth-straight that the Falcons have played in Omaha.
Fantastic Start for Falcons
BGSU continues to have its best start in eight years with its 4-1-1 overall record. The 1996-97 team began the year with a 6-0 record. BGSU is above .500 in the CCHA for the first time since October of 1999. That season the Falcons started the year 3-1-0 in their first four league contests.
Falcons In National Rankings
BGSU's defense and penalty-kill units are among the best in the nation. The Falcon defense is tied for fourth with Dartmouth and Maine, allowing just 2.00 goals-per-game. On the penalty kill, BGSU has allowed just four PPGs in 38 chances (89.5 pct.), ranking them sixth nationally.
Depth Showing for Falcons
Ten different Falcons have had a hand in BGSU's 16 goals scored this season, with freshmen Jonathan Matsumoto and Derek Whitmore each with three. Five of the seven healthy freshmen have scored a goal and six have multiple points in six collegiate games.
Go Ahead and Call It a Comeback
BGSU overcame a three-goal deficit at Notre Dame on Nov. 5, rattling off four unanswered goals before allowing a goal with just three seconds remaining. All four goals came from different Falcons, including SO James Unger's first of the season and FR John Mazzei's first career goal.
