BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
The Bowling Green State University football team rolled to a 49-point halftime lead en route to a 52-0 victory over Western Michigan University Saturday afternoon (Nov. 6) at Perry Stadium. Some notes and numbers from the game (and there are a lot of them) ...
The Falcons scored on their first possession of the game for the fourth-straight game ... the Falcons went 98 yards on that drive, and also had another 98-yard TD drive later in the first quarter ... BGSU now has four drives this season of 90 yards or more.
BGSU tied a school record with 28 points in the first quarter ... that record was set earlier this season, in the win at Temple (Oct. 2, 2004).
The Falcons scored 21 more points in the second quarter, setting a new school record with 49 points in the opening half ... the old record was 43 points, compiled in the 1959 Toledo game ... BG had scored 42 points in the first half of this year's Temple contest.
BGSU set school records with 299 yards of total offense and 14 first downs in the first quarter alone ... the Falcons also established a school best with 551 yards of total offense in the first half.
Redshirt sophomore Omar Jacobs played just one half and completed 17 of 20 passes for an even 300 yards ... he also threw for four touchdowns, tying a career high ... Jacobs, who posted his fifth 300-yard effort in six games, leads the nation with 27 TD passes this year.
That latter total ties Jacobs for the school record for TD tosses in a season ... the record has lasted all of one year, as Josh Harris threw for 27 scores last season ... Jacobs has the 27 TD passes and only two interceptions on the year ... his season total of 2,833 passing yards is the fourth-highest in school history, and his completion percentage of 69.5 has him on a pace to set the BGSU single-season record in that category.
Junior P.J. Pope had 205 yards rushing, his first career 200-yard effort ... Pope also had three TDs, despite playing only a few plays in the second half of the game ... Pope rushed for touchdowns of 88, 41, and seven yards in length, and now has 10 TD rushes this season and 24 in his career ... he now has seven 100+yard efforts in his career, including three this season ... Pope fell just 23 yards shy of the school single-game record for rushing yards ... his rushing total gave BGSU its first 200+yard rusher in a game since Steve Holmes had 220 yards in 1998 against Kent State.
Pope's 202 yards in the first half was a school record for rushing yards in a half.
B.J. Lane also surpassed the 100-yard rushing plateau, with 118 yards in 23 carries ... his totals in both categories set career bests ... Lane's previous career standards were 16 carries in last year's Kent State game and 115 yards in the Ball State contest the next week.
The game marked the first time that BGSU had a pair of 100-yard rushers in the same game in over a decade ... the last such game was on Halloween of 1992, when backs Zeb Jackson (130 yards) and LeRoy Smith (111) each surpassed the century mark in a 44-24 win over Miami.
Junior Charles Sharon caught two TD receptions, of 46 and 10 yards in length ... Sharon leads the team with 10 TD catches this season and has 23 TD catches in his career ... the latter total ranks him third all-time at BGSU ... Sharon's seasonal touchdown total ties his career best, set last year, and puts him just one TD shy of that single-season record (11, Jim Ladd, 1952).
Senior Cole Magner had a 17-yard TD catch and 26-yard scoring reception ... Magner now has five TD receptions this season and 17 in his career.
Senior Keon Newson had two interceptions in the win ... he now has three this season and seven in his career.
Junior Mitchell Crossley had his first career blocked punt ... it was the Falcons' second kick block of the season.
Junior Teddy Piepkow had his first career interception.
Senior Shaun Suisham had seven PATs and a 40-yard field goal ... he now has 42 career field goals, and needs three to break the school career record ... Suisham now has 206 career PATs, and needs 12 more to set an NCAA record (218).
Junior Steve Simonton had a career-long 45-yard punt return.
Junior Van Johnson completed his first career pass, a 16-yard effort to Todd DiBacco.
The Falcon defense posted its first shutout since defeating Ohio, 17-0, in November of 2001.
BGSU's 52-point margin of victory is the Falcons' largest in school history against a MAC opponent ... the Falcons' 666 yards of total offense is the third-highest offensive output since Gregg Brandon came to BGSU prior to the 2001 season ... that total represented the most yards ever allowed by Western Michigan in a game.
A BG WIN...
The win gives the Falcons at least seven wins in a season for four straight years for the first time since 1982-85.
The Falcons now hold a 31-14-3 lead in the series with Western, and BG has three-straight wins against the Broncos.
BGSU is now 14-0 against MAC West teams at home since the end of the 1997 season.
The Falcons have a 35-11 record since 2001, the best overall record for a MAC school .over the last four years (Marshall, 35-12 and Toledo, 33-12)
