BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Lindsay Austin is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Austin, a senior on the BGSU women's basketball team, helped the Falcons to a magical run through the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Austin, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Sycamore H.S.), began her week by being named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year for 2003-04. She accepted her award at the MAC Tournament Banquet Tuesday evening (March 9). That accolade came a day after Austin earned honorable mention to the All-MAC Team.
On Wednesday (March 10), Austin scored 11 points and had a game-high nine assists and eight rebounds against Western Michigan. She hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Falcons a 63-62 win in the MAC Tournament quarterfinal contest.
Two days later, Austin hit another jumper at the buzzer, as her 14-footer downed top-seeded Miami in the semifinals. Austin's shot capped a game-ending, 9-0 run as the Falcons prevailed, 75-74.
Austin had 12 points in that Miami game, and added 10 more in the Falcons' 65-56 loss to Eastern Michigan in the league tourney championship game Saturday (March 13). The last basket of her career gave her exactly 1,000 points, making her the 18th player in school history to reach that plateau.
Also last week, Austin became the BGSU career steals leader, and finished her career with 244. She also became only the fourth player in school history to surpass 500 career assists, and ended with 508. Austin is the only player in BGSU annals to amass both 1,000 points and 500 assists in her tenure.
Austin, who was named to the Academic All-District Team on Feb. 19, is a visual communication technology major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.62.
The Falcons, the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference, ended the season with an overall record of 21-10. BG finished MAC play with an 11-5 record, a complete reversal of last year's 5-11 league mark.
Austin started 110 games, second on that BG list, in her career.
