Farmington Hills, Mich. -
Bowing Green Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing and Corporate Relations Greg Hulen was presented with the third annual CCHA Outstanding Marketing Campaign award for the Falcons' Celebration of the 1984 NCAA Championship Hockey Team at the third annual CCHA Marketing Meetings May 20 in Farmington Hills, Mich. The award was presented after all attendees voted by selecting the top three presentations. Other members of the BGSU Athletic Marketing department include Manni Banks and Justin Burris.
BGSU's marketing presentation focused on the different elements used to build up excitement around the 20th anniversary of the 1984 NCAA Championship, including creating a logo that was used in season ticket brochures, schedule cards, media guide and season poster as well distributing Mountain Dew cans across northwest Ohio featuring the 20th anniversary logo and offering a "Buy-One-Get-One-Free" offer for any Saturday night game. The excitement was focused around the Feb. 13-14 weekend against Lake Superior when Bowling Green put together a special banquet at the student union ballroom to honor the anniversary. Current players individually presented the 1984 players at their position a replica jersey with their name on it, former BG coach Jerry York and the captains from the team addressed the crowd and the dinner concluded with the winning goal in the final overtime shown on video.
All 12 CCHA-member schools had the opportunity to share marketing promotions and ideas that are used on their campuses in an effort to increase attendance and create a more enjoyable fan experiences at CCHA contests. Michigan State's sports marketing department, headed by Associate Athletics Director Mark Hollis, was the inaugural winner for the execution of the Cold War Hockey game Oct. 6, 2001. Last year Northern Michigan's Marketing & Fundraising Coordinator Mike Nelson was honored for his presentation of the Wildcats' Iron Kids Bread National Pride Program
