Five Falcons Head To Regionals

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Five members of the Bowling Green State University track & field team will be traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on May 28-29 for the NCAA Regional Championships, hosted by Louisiana State University. Sprinter Alicia Taylor and distance runner Amber Culp will join throwers Andrean Bunko, Liz Honegger and Kerri McClung to represent BGSU.
Senior Kerri McClung earned her way to regionals in the shot put just last week at the MAC Championships, where she established a new BGSU school record toss of 50-02. During the outdoor potion of the season she has also won the Beaver Invitational (43-06.50) and Hillsdale Relays (48-09), as well as a second-place finish at the All-Ohio Championships (46-10.25). McClung owns the top six performances in the shot put for the Falcons this season.
The freshman combination of Andrean Bunko and Liz Honegger will join McClung in the throws category. Bunko has improved on her personal-best in the javelin the past three weeks. She opened with a toss of 128-02 at the EMU Open, only to out-due herself the following week at the Len Paddock Invitational (132-05). She then went to the MAC Championships on May 13, and surpassed her previous-best mark by nearly 10 feet with a fifth-place-finishing toss of 141-08.
Honegger is coming off a MAC Championship victory in the discus with a throw of 148-05, a mark nearly six feet longer then her nearest competitor. The week prior she set a personal-best mark of 152-05 at the Len Paddock Invitational, for a fifth-place finish. Honegger was the first discus champion from BG since Tammy Asher in 1991.
Senior Amber Culp placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:50.40 at the MAC Championships last week to earn her way to next weekends regionals. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native has first-place finishes at the Hillsdale Relays (10:42.89) and Alabama Relays (10:58.55). Culp also owns the second-fastest steeplechase time in BGSU history (10:42.07) set last season, helping her to qualify for the 2003 Regionals.
The final member of the BGSU track squad making the trip to Louisiana will be Alicia Taylor. Taylor earned her way into the 100-meter hurdle regionals with a third-place finish at the All-Ohio Championships (13.97). The senior sprinter has first-place finishes this season at the Hillsdale Relays (14.04) and EMU Open (14.08), as well as owns the top BGSU time in 100-meter hurdles of all-time (13.84).
Following regionals, any Falcon that were to qualify for Nationals would travel to Austin, Texas on June 8-12.
