CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University senior Kristy Coppes has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Aug. 30). Coppes earns the honor for the first time this season and the third time in her Falcon career.
Coppes becomes the first Falcon women's soccer player to earn league P-O-W honors three times in a career. Jill Conover is the only other player in school history to earn the award on more than one occasion.
Coppes, a native of Findlay, Ohio, shattered the BGSU and MAC records with six goals in the Falcons' season-opening 7-3 win over Duquesne. The old record of four goals was held by BG teammate Samantha Meister.
Coppes fell just one goal shy of matching the NCAA single-match record of seven goals.
Coppes, who entered the season as the school's career scoring leader, increased her school-record totals to 40 goals and 85 points in her BG tenure. She is the only player in school history to have scored three or more goals in multiple matches, and now has three such contests in her career.
She scored all four of BG's second-half goals in the win, setting the school mark for fastest four goals (34:36) in the process. And -- obviously -- Coppes also set the records for fastest five and fastest six goals.
Coppes was one of three Falcons named to the all-tournament team at the team's own Falcon Classic.
BGSU, 1-1-0 on the young season, continues a three-match homestand with a Friday (Sept. 3) contest vs. Michigan State. That match begins at 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field. The Falcons then head to Eastern Illinois for a Sunday (Sept. 5) match.
