ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Delaware scored once in each half to down the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 2-0, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 12). The neutral-site match, part of the Navy Tournament, was held at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
The win improves the Fightin' Blue Hens to 3-1-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 1-5-0.
UD got on the board early, as Alli D'Amico converted a Shannon Alger pass with only 4:01 elapsed. The Blue Hens took that lead into the half, despite the Falcons holding a 6-4 shots advantage in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Mary Beth Creed doubled the UD lead, scoring with just under 27 minutes remaining in the half on a long shot from the left side. That was more than enough for UD goalkeeper Lindsay Shover, who made five saves en route to the shutout win.
At the other end of the field, Falcon 'keeper Ali Shingler made seven saves, many of the spectacular variety, in her complete-match effort.
For the match, the Falcons held a 13-10 advantage in overall shots, and a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Junior Samantha Meister led all players with six shot attempts, including a shot that hit the crossbar early in the second half. Classmate Britt Anderson had hit the post with a shot late in the first stanza.
The Falcons now return home to prepare for the opening of Mid-American Conference play. BGSU will host Ohio University in a Friday (Sept. 17) match, beginning at 4:00 p.m., before welcoming Marshall University to Cochrane Field two days later.
NOTES
QUOTING HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
"Ali Shingler had an inspired game today. She made at least six or seven outstanding saves, several in one-versus-one situations, and kept us in the game for a long period of the 90 minutes. She truly was inspirational in her play, and we are very pleased with her performance."
"At the other end of the field, we were unable to put the finishing touches on any opportunities that we created for ourselves. It was a lack of clinical finishing in front of the goal, together with some bad luck. We had a (Delaware) goal-line clearance, we hit the post twice, and there were a few blocked shots in there, too. But, once again, our lack of finishing and some bad luck caused our demise."
"We know, though, that this run is going to come to an end. We look to get back to winning ways, and we know that to turn the corner, we have to continue to work hard, stay positive and focused, and stick together as a team. And, I know we will do that, because we have a wonderful group of individuals on this team. I have complete and utter faith that we will turn this around, and that by the end of the year we will be talking about the impact we had on the Mid-American Conference."
