Falcons Host Toledo And Northern This Weekend To Begin MAC Action

The Bowling Green State University volleyball team returns home to square off with arch-rival Toledo on Friday, Sept. 24, followed by a Saturday night match with the Huskies of Northern Illinois. Both matches are slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
BGSU CONTINUES HOT STRETCH
After starting the 2004 season 0-3 with loses to #4 Florida, Northwestern and IPFW, the BGSU Falcons have now won seven of their last eight matches and sit at 7-4 entering MAC play.
FALCONS FINISH THIRD AT RAIDER CHALLENGE WITH 2-1 RECORD
BGSU had their second consecutive productive tournament, this week with a 2-1 record in Dayton, Ohio. The Falcons downed both Wright State (3-0) and Morehead State (3-1) but fell to the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest (3-1). The Brown & Orange are coming off a 4-0 record the previous weekend at the West Virginia Invitational. The Falcons finished behind Louisville (4-0) and Wake Forest (3-1) in the weekend tournament.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
The Toledo Rockets (10-0) are coming of victories over Oakland (3-0), UNC-Greensboro (3-0), UW-Green Bay (3-0) and Dayton (3-2) this past weekend at the Clarion Hotel Westgate Rocket Classic. BGSU holds a commanding 42-11 series record over the Rockets, and have won 22 of the last 24 contests inside Anderson Arena.
Northern Illinois (3-8) went 1-2 this past weekend with a victory over South Florida (3-1) but fell to both Northern Iowa (0-3) and Bradley (1-3). The Huskies own a 18-4 overall record over the Falcons, despite the four-set win by BGSU last season.
FRESH FACES LEAD BGSU
Red-shirt freshman Corrie Mills, who entered the Raider Challenge with three kills and two blocks on the season, filled in for an injured Taylor Twite and was named to the all-tournament team. She recorded 19 kills and five total blocks versus Wake Forest and followed that up with 10 kills and 12 total blocks (two short of the school record) for her first career double-double in the win over Morehead State. Freshman Maggie Karges led the Falcons to a win over Wright State with a team-high 19 kills, 22 digs and a .529 hitting percentage, and had 40 kills in the three matches combined. Ashlei Nofzinger, a transfer from Loyola-Chicago, recorded 13 kills and 12 digs versus Wake Forest as well.
FALCONS KILLING THE BALL
The Falcons have seven different players that average nearly 2.00 kills/game. Taylor Twite leads the bunch with 3.37 kills, followed by Melissa Mohr (2.84), Stephanie Swiger (2.66), Corrie Mills (2.43), Maggie Karges (2.26), Ashlei Nofzinger (2.18) and Emily Manser (1.89).
DEFENSE LEADING THE WAY
BGSU is holding opposing teams to a .152 hitting percentage, which ranks third in the MAC behind only Ohio (.105) and Toledo (.117).
Following the Raider Challenge, seven Falcons average 2.00 digs/game.
Madeline Means leads the team with 4.00 digs per game, followed by Maggie Karges (3.47) and Emily Manser (3.06).
Corrie Mills and Melissa Mohr lead the team with 1.64 and 1.42 blocks per game.
SERVING IT UP
In the match versus Morehead State the Falcons had 12 services aces, three short of the school record. Chrissy Gothke led the team with five aces (one short of a BGSU record). Six other Falcons had aces in the match. The Brown & Orange have 79 aces on the season, compared to 55 aces for the opponent. BGSU has four players in the top 15 of the MAC rankings for aces per game.
FALCONS IN THE MAC
With 12.81 assists per game, Amber Mareski ranks third in the MAC.
Melissa Mohr ranks third in the MAC in blocks per game with 1.42. She has nine solo blocks and 45 block-assists on the season.
Mohr also ranks fifth in the MAC with .47 aces/game.
MAC TOURNAMENT COMING TO BGSU For the second consecutive year Falcon volleyball will be hosting a tournament a tournament inside Anderson Arena, only this time the winner receives an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. The Falcons will be hosting the 2004 Mid-American Conference Tournament on Nov. 19-21. Last season the Falcons hosted West Virginia, Iowa State and Murray State in the BGSU Invitational. BGSU finished that tournament 2-1, and placed second behind Murray State.
