MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Rosamaria Rago's goal late in the first half was all host Central Michigan University needed to hold off the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team by a 1-0 score Friday afternoon (Sept. 24). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the CMU Soccer Complex.
With the win, the hosts improve to 4-4-1 on the year, and 2-1-1 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 1-7-1 and 0-2-1, respectively.
Falcon goalkeeper Ali Shingler made eight saves in the match, as CMU outshot the Brown and Orange by a 16-7 count. Anne Decker made three stops en route to the shutout win for the Chippewas.
The host Chippewas had several good scoring chances midway through the first half. With just under 20 minutes left, CMU's Laura Roberts took a shot that Shingler was able to deflect into the air and then catch.
The Chippewas kept coming, however, and broke through on Rago's goal with 8:01 left in the half. On the play, the ball came to Rago at the top of the 18-yard box. She took a shot, and the blooper went over Shingler, who was a few yards off of her line. The BG 'keeper got a hands on the ball, but could not stop its flight, and the Chippewas had the lead.
The hosts kept the pressure on, but Shingler held tough for the remainder of the first half. She ended another Central flurry by punching a shot skyward, then leaping to grab it, holding on despite being fouled.
Perhaps BGSU's best chance in the game came just before halftime. Junior Julie Trundle took a corner kick in the final minute of the half, and the ball bounded over several players and toward freshman Gina Rossi. Rossi headed the ball, but her hard shot was right at Decker.
In the second half, the Falcons could not sustain any offensive momentum. BGSU took only one shot in the final 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, Central's Alison Heydorn had a grade-A scoring chance, bearing down on Shingler on a breakaway. But, Shingler was able to deflect Heydorn's shot over the crossbar.
Near the midway point of the half, Jacquie Lacek -- tied with BG's Kristy Coppes for the MAC goal-scoring lead -- came in on a partial breakaway, but Shingler was able to make the save.
The Falcons caught a break with only 5:51 left in the match. The Chippewas had numbers as they came into the penalty area, and Rachel Snyder took a shot that Shingler was able to stop. The rebound came right to Lacek, who slid the ball into the empty net.
The referee conferred with the assistant referee at that end of the field, however, and disallowed the goal, ruling that CMU had been offsides on the play. The Falcons still had life.
But, BGSU could not capitalize on the second chance, as the Falcons could not penetrate the CMU defense over the final few minutes.
CMU's 16-7 shots advantage included a 9-3 margin in shots on goal.
The Falcons will head to Eastern Michigan University for a Sunday (Sept. 26) contest beginning at 1:00 p.m. Eastern picked up a 4-1 win over Toledo on Friday.
