CHARLESTON, Ill. - Host Eastern Illinois University scored early in each half en route to a 2-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 5). The non-conference match was held at Lakeside Field.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 2-2-0 on the season, while dropping the Falcons to 1-3-0.
The Panthers, coming off road matches vs. Notre Dame and Nebraska, took an early lead. Trisha Walter opened the scoring for the home team at the 9:02 mark, and EIU took that 1-0 lead into the intermission. Less than three minutes into the second half, Michelle Steinhaus doubled the lead for the Panthers, and the Falcons could not recover.
EIU held a 20-14 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Tiffany Groene made four saves to pick up the shutout win, while Falcon 'keeper Ali Shingler made six stops on the day.
BGSU now readies for next weekend's tournament at Navy. The Falcons will face the host Midshipmen on Friday (Sept. 10) before taking on Delaware two days later.
