Falcons Square-Off With Preseason Favorites On Sunday

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team, fresh off a victory over Ball State last weekend, travels to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to square off with the defending Mid-American Conference champions and 2005 preseason favorite Central Michigan Chippewas this Sunday (Jan. 23). The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. inside Rose Arena.
Recap Of Last Weekend's Action Versus Ball State
The Falcons recorded their first win of the 2005 campaign by downing Ball State 193.00-191.750 last Sunday inside the Eppler Complex. Junior Jessica Guyer led the way by placing first on both the vault (9.775) and floor (9.850)
Sophomore Bethany Kenel performed well on the beam for the Falcons, where she tied for first with a 9.775, while senior Kristin DiPietro was able to tie for fourth with teammate Breanne Metzger, each posting marks of 9.675.
Bowling Green dominated the bars with Kari Elste posting a 9.800 and Jessica Bradley with a score of 9.775 to tie her for second.
DiPietro and Metzger placed third and fourth in the all-around with scores of 38.625 and 38.300.
Elste Earns MAC Specialist Of The Week
BGSU gymnast Kari Elste was awarded the Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week for her help in defeating Ball State 193.000-191.750. The senior captured first-place on the bars with a 9.800 in her only event in the win over the Cardinals.
The Wheaton, Illinois, native posted a 9.800 on the bars the week prior in the season-opener versus Kentucky, and owns a career-high 9.875 on the bars.
A Look At The Chippewas
CMU has been selected again by the preseason coaches poll to be the MAC gymnastics regular-season champions, and is chosen along with Kent State to win this year's MAC tournament. The Chippewas have won 10 Mid-American Conference titles since 1990.
Central Michigan is coming off a 194.050-191.850 victory over Utah State in their first home meet of the year. Senior Kara Reighard placed first in beam (9.850) and floor exercise (9.900), and won the all-around (39.250), and was named MAC Gymnast of the Week for her efforts. Sara Burtinsky, also a senior, placed first in bars with a score of 9.825.
The Chippewas own a 19-11 all-time series advantage over the Falcons, including a 196.225-195.900 win last season over BGSU.-
Schedule Reminder
Following the meet with Central Michigan the Falcons will once again hit the road for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with Eastern Michigan on Jan. 29 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, before returning home on Feb. 4, when they will host Kent State.
