BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hockey team defeated Windsor 7-1 Monday night at the BGSU Ice Arena with the help of six different Falcons recording goals. Sophomore Derek Whitmore led the bunch with a pair of power-play goals in the exhibition opener.
Whitmore had the lone goal in the opening stanza, but he was joined by four other Falcons to record goals in the second period. Whitmore, junior James Unger and senior Ryan Barnett each recorded power-play goals. Fellow senior Brett Pilkington joined in on the second period barrage, recording the fourth goal in the span of just over 14 minutes.
A pair of sophomores closed out the scoring in the third period. Jonathan Matsumoto chipped in with a goal as well as Mike Nesdill, who hit a one-timer past Windsor goaltender Reese Kalleitner with just two minutes left in the contest.
BGSU goaltenders John Horrell, Jimmy Spratt and Bob Frazee may have answered many questions about how the Falcons were going to be able to replace All-American goaltender Jordan Sigalett. Horrell (3-3) and Spratt (4-4) stopped all seven shots faced in the first two periods, with Frazee turning away 11-of-12 shots in the third period.
The BGSU defense also held Windsor without a power-play goal on 10 attempts.
For the night Bowling Green out-shot Windsor 38-19, and was 4-for-16 on the power play,
Up next for the Falcons is the annual Orange & White scrimmage, set for Saturday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the BGSU Ice Arena before welcoming Merrimack and Boston College to Bowling Green (Oct. 14-15) to kick-off the regular season.
