AKRON
The Zips are led defensively by Kim Horn and her 4.39 digs per game average. Akron brings a balanced attack on the offensive side of the net with three seperate Zips averaging over three kills per game.
Despite a 7-9 record, the Zips pose a much tougher challenge for the Falcons than it may seem as Akron is an impressive 6-1 on their home floor.
The last time BGSU took on the Zips was in the first round of the MAC tournament a year ago. The Falcons defeated Akron 3-1 (30-28, 24-30, 30-27, 30-21) to advance to the quarterfinals. The Brown and Orange totaled 15 blocks with 11 of them coming from returning Falcons Stephanie Swiger (6) and Chrissy Gothke (5). Gothke also recorded her career-high 31 digs in the regular season match-up with Akron last season.
BUFFALO
The Falcons then head to Alumni Arena looking to hand Buffalo their first home loss of the season. Coach Jim Lodes enters his rookie campaign as coach of the Bulls with high expectiations.
Buffalo is led by its two seniors, Katie Weekley and Amy Brown. Brown averages 10.90 assists per game and moved into second place on the Buffalo career assists list earlier this season. Weekley has swatted 83 kills , good for a 1.34 per game average this season.
The Falcons last contest against Buffalo ended in a 3-0 sweep by Bowling Green. Madeline Means set her career-high in digs (26) which she tied later that week against Akron in the first round of the MAC tourney.
Gothke Looks to Become Second Ever
The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will hit the road this weekend to take on a pair of MAC East foes. The Falcons will play Akron Friday followed by a battle with Buffalo Saturday night. With 772 assists and 992 digs in her career, Junior Chrissy Gothke is on pace to join Linda Popovich (`86-89) as the only two players in Falcon history to compile 1000 assists and digs in their career. Even more impressive is the fact that Gothke has a chance to achieve this in just three seasons. Popovich racked up 1,247 digs and 4,406 assists in her illustrious career donning the Brown and Orange.
The Twin Towers
A pair of former redshirts are currently tied for fifth place on the Mid-American Conference blocks list. Sophomore Corrie Mills and freshman Kendra Halm have 62 and 53 kills respectively. Both Falcons are averaging 1.15 blocks per game.
Race For 1,000
Senior Emily Manser and junior Chrissy Gothke have the opportunity to accomplish something very special this season. Manser has recorded 905 digs for her career in the Brown and Orange, while Gothke has posted 992 digs in her Falcons career. If the pair of Falcons were to both reach 1,000 digs during the 2005 campaign they would become only the second duo to accomplish the feat in the same season after Tammy Schiller and Lisa Mika both surpassed 1,000 digs in 1991.
