AKRON, Ohio - Quoting Bowling Green State University head coach Curt Miller, after the Falcons' 61-52 victory over the University of Akron on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 12)...
"Akron is a hard-nosed team that lets it all hang out. They just keep getting better and better, and as they continue to get recruiting classes in here, they will be a handful, because they are very well-coached."
"We knew what we were getting into. (Akron) is very good at defending the arc, so we thought points in the paint would be a big deal. We struggled getting the ball inside early, but Kelly Kapferer kept us in it in the first half. With Liz Honegger in foul trouble in the first half, I don't know where we would have been without the effort of Kelly Kapferer."
"But, we just didn't execute in the first half. We warned the kids all week about how dangerous this game could be, and not to overlook a very talented, hard-nosed Akron team. But, to our credit, it is another road win, which is never easy. And, to win a road game without playing your best basketball is a sign that this team is maturing. Our defense came through for us; I thought our defense was good."
(On going the entire game without making a three-pointer)
"We talked about it, late (in the game) in one of the timeouts. I knew it was somewhere near 200 games in a row that we had made at least one three. I told the kids that they were defending us, but we're getting open looks, and you've got to step up and make open looks. With the amount of open looks that Carin (Horne) and Liz had, combined with how well they consistently shoot, I'd be hard-pressed to believe that not one of those would go in. But, we survived that. We shot over 50 percent from the field from inside the arc. We stayed aggressive, we were driving to the basket and we were getting to the foul line. If you make some three's, maybe you can blow the game open a little bit. But, that's to Akron's credit, they defend the arc very well, and nothing changed with that today."
(On Kelly Kapferer's play)
"I'm happy for Kelly. She is relatively close to her hometown here, and I imagine she had a lot of fans in the stands today. I told her after the game that she was the MVP, and without her effort, I don't know where we would have been. She kept us above water in the first half, and allowed us to get going. And, that's what fifth-year seniors do."
(On holding Jessie Crooks to four points)
"They (Akron) only had 16 field goals in the game. Overall, we did a good job to hold them to that total, so I was happy with that. Also, we did a good job of concentrating on Crooks, and the individual credit goes to Ali Mann there. But, we also shut out an athletic `3' player in Angie Hutchinson. The player that stepped up big for Akron was Jessica Deville, a nice, talented freshman. But, for the most part, I can't complain about our defensive effort, holding them to 34 percent from the field and only allowing 16 field goals. I thought our defense provided us with an opportunity to have a really good game; we just couldn't get on track offensively."
"We did outrebound them and we kept battling, and our turnovers were low, especially in the second half. It was ugly at times, but we'll take an ugly road win any time we can get it."
(On Tuesday's game vs. Central Michigan)
"Central Michigan is a very, very good defensive team, and they are more athletic than a lot of people give them credit for. They are a very dangerous team. I am a big fan of their personnel, and I keep telling people that it is not long before Central will be a dominating team in this league. Hopefully, they won't put it all together against us on Tuesday night, and I hope a lot of people come on out and cheer on the first-place Falcons."
