The Game
Senior John Reimold scored a BGSU MAC Tournament record 38 points and defended the potential game tying shot and senior Josh Almanson added 20, including a huge three-pointer with a minute to play to lead #8 BGSU to a 75-73 win over #9 Ball State in the first round of the MAC Tournament in Anderson Arena.
The Falcons came out the gate on defense and took control of the game early, thanks to 65.3% shooting in the first half. Reimold led the way with 23 and buried five of eight treys, including one in the closing seconds of the half to give the Falcons a 45-30 halftime lead.
Ball State, which was playing without its leading scorer Dennis Trammell who had scored 21.5 points per game against BGSU this season, suffered another blow in the first half when sophomore Peyton Stovall (17 ppg.) left the game with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. However, the Cardinals did not go down without a fight.
Like the first meeting between the teams in Anderson Arena 19 days ago, BGSU saw a double digit lead erased when the Cardinals took a 51-50 lead with 10:13 remaining.
BGSU regained the lead for good when sophomore John Floyd, who came back 48 hours after suffering a serious high ankle sprain against Central Michigan, found Reimold cutting in the lane for a layup giving BGSU a 54-52 lead.
Reimold's only triple of the second half gave BGSU a 62-54 lead with 5:57 remaining, but as happened so many times at home this year, the game would go down to the final seconds.
Skip Mills hit two free throws with 1:33 left to make it 72-71 BGSU, but with the shot clock winding down, Almanson buried his only three of the game to give BGSU a 75-71 lead with a minute to go.
The Cardinals used two offensive rebounds and two free throws by Anthony Kent to cut the lead back to 75-73 with 41 seconds left.
Rather than foul, Ball State forced a shot by senior Cory Eyink with that Terrance Chapman rebounded and dished to Mills who went the length of the court down the right side and shot a hard layup (with Reimold in his face) that caromed out of the hands of Chapman and was recovered by BGSU sophomore Austin Montgomery.
