Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University hockey coach Scott Paluch has announced the 2005-06 Falcon schedule. Highlighting the schedule are 20 home games, including three Thursday and one Tuesday contests, and visits by former Falcons George Roll and Wayne Wilson, and former BGSU coach Jerry York.
The 20 home dates, not including a season-opening exhibition contest vs. Windsor, are the most for BGSU since 1993-94. BGSU had 15 regular-season home games (9-5-1) and a home playoff series for the first time in 10 years last season. Six of BGSU's first eight regular-season games are at home and seven of the first eight are in Ohio.
York and his Boston College Eagles come to the BGSU Ice Arena on Saturday, Oct. 15, for a 7:05 p.m. contest. It will mark the third time that a York-led BC team has visited the BGSU Ice Arena. BGSU swept a two-game home series from the Eagles, Oct. 18-19, 1996, by the scores of 8-3 and 4-2.
George Roll and Clarkson University come to Bowling Green on Friday, Dec. 9, for a 7:05 p.m. contest. Roll, who just completed his second season as head coach at Clarkson, was a member of the Falcons' 1984 National Championship team and played at BGSU from 1981-85. Roll was a senior in 1984-85, the year current BGSU coach Scott Paluch was a freshman, and served as a graduate assistant in 1987-88.
The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) will enter its first season as a Division I hockey program in 2005-06 and comes to the BGSU Ice Arena on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 5:05 p.m. The Tigers are coached by former Falcon Wayne Wilson who was a co-captain of the BGSU 1984 National Championship squad. Wilson played at BGSU from 1980-84 and served on the coaching staff for 13 seasons, including 11 as a full-time assistant.
Besides Boston College, three other teams that competed in the 2004-05 NCAA Tournament will visit the BGSU Ice Arena. Included in that group is 2005 Central Collegiate Hockey Association Champion Michigan, Jan. 21 (Saturday), in-state rival Ohio State, Oct. 20 (Thursday) and Jan. 7 (Saturday), and non-conference foe Colgate, Jan. 3 (Tuesday).
BGSU kicks off the season with an exhibition game at home vs. the University of Windsor on Monday, Oct. 3. The regular season begins with a visit from Merrimack on Friday, Oct. 14, followed by BC on Oct. 15. The first CCHA foe that BGSU will face is Ohio State on Thursday, Oct. 20, at home. The Falcons then travel to Columbus on Friday, Oct. 21.
The Falcons will travel to Storrs, Connecticut, for the UConn Classic, Dec. 29-30. BGSU will play UMass at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, and then either UConn or Army on Dec. 30.
The CCHA has altered its playoff format for 2005-06 with the top four regular-season finishers receiving a bye for the first round of the league playoffs, which take place March 3-5 at campus sites. Teams four through eight will host teams nine through 12. The winners of those series will then travel to seeds one through four the following week, March 10-12. The CCHA Championships will be held in Joe Louis Arena, March 17-18.
