BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's swimming coach Keri Buff has announced the hiring of Rich Murphy as an assistant coach for the program. Murphy joins the Falcons after serving as head coach for Sun Devil Aquatics in Tempe, Arizona since August of 2003.
"I am excited for my transition into college athletics," said Murphy. "I am looking forward to working at BGSU and to help these athletes achieve their swimming goals."
While with the Gold Medal Club, Sun Devil Aquatics program, Murphy, who is recognized as a one of the top club coaches in the country earning Level 5 (age group) and Level 4 (senior) status with the American Swimming Coaches Association, saw his athletes compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials, Nationals, and Junior Nationals. In addition, members of his team earned marks that ranked among the top 16 nationally over 50 times. He also saw members of his team achieve nine individual and 12 relay records in the state of Arizona and one athlete set a Mexican National Record.
Murphy also served as a graduate assistant (2002-03) and a volunteer assistant (2001-02) at Arizona State, working with the middle distance athletes (freestyle and breaststroke).
"He is the missing piece of the puzzle," said head coach Keri Buff. "With Rich on board, I believe we have the best coaching staff in the MAC."
Murphy is a 1997 graduate of Notre Dame, where he competed for the Irish from 1993-97. He also has coached for the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics and Los Altos Mountain View Acquatic Club in California. He also was a member of the U.S. National Junior Team in 1991 and 1992.
