BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Visiting Wright State University took a three-goal halftime lead en route to a 4-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28). The non-conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 1-1 on the young season, while dropping the Falcons to 0-2.
Megan Mattioda got the visitors on the scoreboard at the 17:20 mark, running onto a ball and poking it past Falcon goalkeeper Ali Shingler. The ball glanced off of the right goalpost, just below the crossbar, and caromed into the net.
Six-and-a-half minutes later, Jodie Shoaf took a corner kick for the Raiders. The kick was low, but a Falcon defender, attempting to clear the ball, miskicked it, and it bounded into the net.
Michelle Sarmiento gave the Raiders a three-goal lead with just under 37 minutes elapsed, off of a Mattioda corner kick. The ball bounced once before Sarmiento's half-volley deposited it into the upper right-hand corner of the net.
Arguably BGSU's best scoring chance of the half came after senior co-captain Ashley Wentzel stole the ball from a WSU defender on the end line. Wentzel slid a pass to classmate Samantha Meister, but her shot from approximately 10 yards out was blocked, and WSU was able to clear the ball out of danger.
In the second half, Wright State wasted little time in adding to the lead. Just 21 seconds in, Kim Chianese headed home a Desire' Morris cross, and the margin was four goals.
The Brown and Orange had several chances in the second half, but could not get the ball behind WSU 'keeper Steph Comisar. The Falcons' best chance of the day came with just under 19 minutes left. Wentzel took a corner kick, and the ball was deflected out of the penalty area. From approximately 30 yards out, senior co-captain Natalie Sampiller ripped a hard shot, and the ball rang off the left post and bounded away.
Comisar picked up the win for the Raiders, making one save. Shingler made four saves for the Falcons.
WSU held a narrow 12-10 edge in total shot attempts, but had nine shots on goal to the Falcons' one.
"This was another extremely disappointing performance," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "I use the word 'disappointing' because I know this team has so much more potential than it is showing right now.
"It is disappointing because we are drastically underachieving right now, and not showing anyone how good we are, either as individuals or as a team.
"After the first 46 minutes, we actually played pretty well, and played with a sense of purpose and unity. But, prior to that, we had made so many mistakes that we had given ourselves too big of a mountain to climb.
"We're not pushing the panic button, because I know this team has great potential. As soon as they begin to fulfill that potential, we're going to be just fine."
BGSU will look to break into the win column next weekend, when the team heads to the state of Arizona. The Falcons will participate in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Mountain Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz., taking on host Northern Arizona Friday night (Sept. 2) and Boise State Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4).
