BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Host Indiana University scored a pair of second-half goals just 18 seconds apart, snapping a scoreless draw and lifting the Hoosiers to a 2-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18). The non-conference match was held at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
With the win, the Hoosiers improve to 4-3-1 on the season. BGSU closes the non-league portion of the regular-season schedule with a record of 4-4-0.
Robin Barker and Megan Pipkins each scored for the hosts in the 53rd minute of the match. The Hoosiers outshot the Falcons by a 27-4 count, which included an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Ali Shingler made a season-high nine saves for the Brown and Orange.
The Hoosiers outshot the Falcons, 8-1, in the opening half, but Shingler made five saves to keep the match scoreless.
The home team had eight corner kicks on the day, while holding BG without a single corner. It was off of one of those IU corner kicks that the Hoosiers broke the scoreless draw.
IU's Molly Kruger took the kick, and the ball found Barker, who scored her first goal of the season. That goal came at the 52:11 mark.
Only 18 seconds later, Lindsay McCarthy fed Pipkins for her first goal of the year, and the two-goal edge was more than enough for the home team.
For the hosts, Lauren Fabbro and Stacey Van Boxmeer each played a half and made one save.
"We are disappointed, especially with the second-half performance," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "I thought at halftime that we had given ourselves a wonderful chance to win the game. We had defended very well, we had frustrated them, we had kept things very tight, and we talked about some factors that we needed to adjust to in the second half.
"Unfortunately, we did not put that plan into operation. We had two very bad defensive lapses within 20 seconds of each other, and that decided the game. Outside of that one minute, or less than one minute, we battled very well, but that was all it took.
"We were very disappointed that we didn't show our true colors today, but it's another lesson to be learned. Hopefully it will put us in good stead for the next portion of the season, which we are very excited to enter."
BGSU now prepares for the Mid-American Conference schedule, which begins next weekend. The Falcons will travel to the MAC's "West Coast" for a Friday (Sept. 23) match vs. Northern Illinois University, before taking on Western Michigan University two days later.
