DeKALB, Ill. - Senior Britt Anderson had her second two-goal match in as many Fridays, and classmate Julie Trundle had a school record-tying three assists, as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 3-1 win at Northern Illinois University Friday (Sept. 23). The match was held at Huskie Soccer Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-4-0 on the season, and, of course, 1-0-0 in the MAC. Host NIU drops to 2-4-2 and 0-1-0, respectively.
Seniors accounted for all of BGSU's scoring on the afternoon, as Samantha Meister had the Falcons' other goal, her team-leading fifth of the season.
Yet another senior, Ali Shingler, picked up the complete-match win in goal. Shingler was called upon to make just one save.
Set pieces were the source of much success for the Falcons on Friday, as each of the team's first two goals came directly off of Trundle corner kicks. Meister headed home BG's first corner kick of the day, at the 12:55 mark, for the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, Anderson's first goal was another header, with the play starting with another Trundle corner. The ball was cleared out of the box, but senior Leah Eggleton won the ball and played it back out wide to Trundle, who served the ball to Anderson. The Falcons led by a pair of goals at 55:37.
BGSU had nine corner kicks to the Huskies' one on the afternoon.
NIU sophomore Karen Enockson cut the BG lead in half with a goal in the 68th minute, but Anderson sealed the win with her second goal of the match with 9:33 remaining in the second half.
"It is great to get our first MAC win, especially on the road," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "I thought it was a very polished performance from Bowling Green.
"We had a game plan, we changed some personnel around, and stuck to that game plan very well against a spirited Northern Illinois team.
"We took three great goals -- three headers, which was nice to see. That is something we work on in practice, and the two individuals who got those goals are very good in the air. And, it was great to see Julie Trundle get three assists and tie the school record.
"Overall, it was a very good performance. We thoroughly deserved the victory, and we look forward to our game at Western Michigan on Sunday. Also, congratulations to Fred Thompson and the Falcon men's soccer team on a fantastic win over Ohio State today, capping a great day for BGSU soccer."
The Falcons held a 12-4 advantage in shot attempts, and BGSU had nine shots on goal to just two for the Huskies. NIU 'keeper Carrie Dvorak made six saves.
After allowing eight goals in two lopsided losses to open the season, the Falcons have gone 5-2-0 over the last seven matches, allowing a total of just six goals during that time.
The Falcons remain on the road for a Sunday (Sept. 25) match against Western Michigan University. That contest is scheduled to begin at noon at the WMU Soccer Complex.
